I agree with most of what you have to say regarding the internet and Googles income but it would seem that as far as gmail is concerned there are far too many 'alarm bells' ringing from a large number of respected sites and periodicals Surely it is only fair that the situation should be brought to everyones attention and let them make their own minds up.
You also seem to object the the term 'reading' I am unsure what word you would prefer but it is the word Gogle themselves used when pointing out that email wasnt 'read' by humans.....
This thread concerns TalkTalk, those of us with existing accounts all have our own views on how good (?) or bad their services is and we freely express these views on this site for everyones benefit.
I think TT is awful and have said so in this thread. Some may disagree.
Likewise when I see someone thinking of joining Gmail I feel that I can voice an opinion especially when it is backed up by reliable and respected sources NOT just from the internet. The internet quotes were all I could find quickly in response to your 'nonsense' post and that my post should be substantiated. What state would this board be in if every post had to be 'substantiated'?
I am a believer in 'free speech' and would hope that nobody would take what I say as absolute fact but would take the time and effort to check the 'facts' to their own satisfaction. Unless someone points out the possible downsides of any 'offer' maybe everyone would consider that it is the best thing since 'sliced bread' without making the necessary enquiries.
I really hope that the 'moneysavers' will take the effort to read both our posts and other information on this subject and make an informed descision on whether to join gmail or aviod it like the plague. Their choice, not mine or yours.0 -
at the end of the day you only get what you pay for nothing is for free why do you think the director of talk talk has just got a brand new spanking ferrari spyder0

I read about the poor service but its a risk worth taking as it'll cut my monthly phone and broadband bill in half.
I hope it works out for you. I left my previous ISP Freedom2surf after a terrible experience. I was lucky that I was on a 1 month contract. 18 months is simply far too long. When your internet connection is slow it doesn´t matter how cheap it is!0 -
Hi everyone,
First time I've done a posting, so please bear with me!
Just thought I'd raise my concerns about Talk Talk.
My neighbour recently joined up for Bband over the net, received her Welcome letter but no start up pack. We called to chase (oh so many times)but each time, after finally getting through, would be put throught to their sales department who could not answer any queries. After trying to speak to someone on numerous occasions, she decided she'd had enough and wanted to cancel the contract. So she tried, and tried, and tried again, to no avail. Each call she made was again put through to the sales department who were unable to do anything at all and merely told her to call back. She emailed and, eventually got a reply saying, that she could not cancel her contract because she was out of the 'cooling off' period even though she had been calling to cancel the contract well within the time limit and has never received a modem, and therefore has never logged on to the service!
Talk talk are adamant that she is contractually bound and refuse to accept a cancellation. She has cancelled the Direct Debit with her bank so they can't take any money but they are being increasingly difficult. All of the email replies she gets are either standard responses or from different people who say they don't know the full details and she has to explain again and again.
Anyone got any ideas what she should do next?

Put it down to experience and try to get out without paying more than the £70 they will enforce.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

I give below a few quick snippets taken from the WWW - sugest you look for yourself if you think that Google is NOT an advertising supported Company....
In return for all that inbox space, Google wants just one favor: to be allowed to scan the content of your incoming messages and serve content-targeted ads alongside them
Google's Gmail privacy policy points out that your email will be retained even after you close your account -
"The contents of your Gmail account also are stored and maintained on Google servers in order to provide the service. Indeed, residual copies of email may remain on our systems, even after you have deleted them from your mailbox or after the termination of your account." Quote from Google
"While Google brags that no humans will read your emails, the entire Gmail program will involve extensive automated profiling of you as an individual. Quote Doubleclick Exec.
In England, watchdog group Privacy International filed a complaint that Gmail would violate the European Union's privacy laws. Silicon Valley's paper of record, the San Jose Mercury News, fretted on its editorial page, "If Google ogles your mail, can Ashcroft be far behind?" The controversy bubbled all the way up to late night, where Conan O'Brien joked about Google inserting ads for 1984.

Im sure you will be able to find more........ substantiated ????
Nothing you have listed supports the claim you made about gmail planning to spam its members in the future, its well known that gmail scan (not read) your email and thats part of the deal but I don't understand how scanning your email means they plan to spam everyone in the future.
The spam it the part that can't be substantiated..0 -

OK, I think there needs to be some clarification here. I've had and used Gmail since it started. I use it for my main email account, in fact. Gmail do not spam you, as such. It's not like you receive unsolicited mail from Google. What they do is scan your email and show relevant small sponsored links on the right hand side of the screen as you read your email. The links directly relate to the content of the email. That is not spam.
Google's own explanation is better than anything I could say:What's with the ads and related information in Gmail?
About Ads & Related Information Want to know more about the ads and related pages delivered by Gmail? Glad you asked!
Ads in Gmail are placed in the same way that ads are placed alongside Google search results and, through the Google AdSense program, on content pages across the web. The goal is to provide users with helpful ads, links and content relevant to their specific interests.
Gmail is a technology-based program. Advertising and related information are shown using a completely automated process. Ads are selected for relevance and served by Google computers using the same contextual advertising technology that powers our AdSense program. This technology enables Google to target dynamically changing content such as email or daily news stories.
No humans will read the content of your email in order to target such advertisements or related information. Because the ads and related pages are matched to information that is of interest to you, we hope you'll find them relevant and useful.
Your Privacy
Google does not and will never rent, sell or share information that personally identifies you for marketing purposes without your express permission. No email content or other personally identifiable information will be provided to advertisers.
Privacy is an issue we take very seriously. Only ads classified as Family-Safe are distributed through our content network and to your Gmail inbox. For example, Google would block certain ads from running next to an email about catastrophic news.
If you'd like to know more about how Google handles your Gmail information, please read our Gmail Privacy Policy.
The spam filter on Gmail is excellent. Crap I've marked as spam never makes it to my inbox. In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?
It's time to make that change.
