Strangely, not everything on the internet is accurate or true.
Google's "income" is largely generated from revenue, these include adwords, click throughs, participation programs and similar.
(Although the other year 20% was registered to be from their bank account interest alone apparently....)
Yes most of googles revenue comes from 'advertising' programs, guess what? Aside from adult content, spam and fishing, advertisements make up the majority of the internet, its just a fact of life.
You see alot more ads in magazines, TV, billboards and in papers, the only difference is that the ones online are targetted, which isn't necessarily a 'bad' thing. Infact, it means you're less likely to get shown irrelevant advertisements.
As I said before every website you visit records hundereds if not thousands of pieces of information about you, your habits and the software/hardware you use.
Google are not the only company to use targetted advertising, nearly all sites do now as its alot 'smarter' and increases potential revenue.
The 'ads' in Gmail are similar to that of Google search site, they are unobtrusive and hardly noticable, unlike those on Hotmail and 90% of websites (not using Google adwords or similar) that use annoying flash banners, screen poppers, popups, flash overs and similar advertising techniques used to grab your attention (often by taking up most of the screen area...).
Yes Google use algorithms to target advertising, yes they make money from it, but in no way are they 'reading' your email at all, its no different from a standard site using your IP to shown location-based adverts on a website, or MSN advertising chat related info at the advertisement in the bottom of Messenger or even MS recording 99% of your OS usage and surfing habits to help them target software solutions are their audience much better.....
Like I said before, if you find Gmail 'reading' your email a shocking revelation then you really need to seach for some internet security information, quickly.
Although good luck finding a search engine or any website that doesnt display ads....especially targetted ones

Redux - Well i wasn't aware of that, all i know is that i used to be on cable and wireless for everything, yet it ALL changed over to NTL when it was advertised that C+W had been bought by them.
I just assumed that it was all bought out because i didn't have any tie to C+W anymore, it's an easy mistake/assumption to make, surely!
You really didn't need to go to all that trouble to try to make me look stupid though, and the tone of your post is very patronising/condescending when all you had to say was the last 2 lines of your post (link and what to note on the link). :rolleyes:Lost lbs =

Many companies have started to use 18 month contracts, especially mobile phone companies, as we all know, its simply a way to get more money out of you and make certain "6 month half price line rental?!!?" / "cashback!!" deals look better to the buyer.
Unfortunately it will show that the majority of companies that supply commodities such as mobile phones and services such as broadband and similar will switch to 18 month or even 24month contracts, simply so they can get more cash out of you :-/
Although the long contract doesn't make the service necessarily bad, its just 'standard' really.
If the service is so poor that it doesn't meet their advertising/terms and agreements / support agreement then you can terminate the agreement (or atleast get some cash back) as they are not complying to their part of the contract.
(Note: This may involve legal action...)raeble wrote:For such a fast service I think the download limit is far too low. It should be double that. You can get to 40gb by using legal services within a month on slower services, with four times the download speed you'll have to keep a close eye on your usuage because you can hit your limit so much faster.
Many 'standard' users who simply email and browse probably won't reach the limit at all, although they will be able to approach it slightly faster.
Really the only difference applies to pure downloading, such as over P2P software where you can leave it downloading constantly and there are no 'delays' compared to normal usage where most of the time is spent by the user typing, reading or simply just looking rather than requesting data
Like I've said before, if you download alot, then TT probably isn't for you
Unfortunately many people are drawn in by broadband due to its high speed, yet never use its potential....they simply have the ability to browse pages and send emails slightly faster.
(Obviously, compared to a 56k connection the difference is obvious, but between a 4mb and 8mb connection - discounting pure downloading, under normal useage, its not).

Perhaps this requires further clarification.
The checker tells you of an intention to unbundle (convert to LLU), TalkTalk bear the cost of you not being unbundled in the meantime. This applies to all customers signing up to this service until at least June (subject to BT pulling their finger out over the new LLU delivery system designed to automate the complex process of unhooking customers from BT's network onto LLU operators' networks - see The Register http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/04/12/carphone_llu_deadline/ ).
TalkTalk have stated up front that they will be running at a loss until the LLU rollout starts (although it's interesting that broadband activation dates have slipped into August already so TalkTalk do not have to pay BT a bean for the broadband portion until then, if at all - tsk tsk).
If you cannot get LLU then you then pay £10/month for broadband IN ADDITION TO the £20.99 (not so great a deal in my view unless all your relatives live abroad and even then it's debatable...!).
Key point is that TalkTalk get the line rental monies when you sign up irrespective of whether you then get LLU'd or not (it just makes it cheaper for them if you are). BT get their cut of this (I think you are right Claire, it's £10) until the line is LLU'd.

viken wrote:I've had a talk talk subsription for some time, but have noticed since the free broadband service has been advertised a new web site has been developed and the tel. No. for customer services has vanished. My broadband provider is telewest and provide a good service, unlimited and very fast. I contacted telewest, threatened to leave ( to talk talk ) and they have now kindly reduced my monthly fee by £18.50. It pays to haggle.
What broadband service are you on to get a discount like that?0 -

Could be 10meg BB, with the full tv package and talk unlimited phone package? The poster did say it was off their monthly fee.. not just their broadband cost.Lost lbs =

I feel I should point out that an 18 month contract with Talk Talk could be extremely frustrating if you have to contact their customer services at any time. In fact 18 months is about how long it will take you to get any sense out of them. I have just left Talk Talk because of their appalling customer services, I would leave it for now and wait for someone else to come up with something as competitive.0

Having just posted that, can anyone recommend a broadband service other than CPW/Talk Talk??!!! Madasafish looks good, is that still the case? I only want something cheap, we aren't the highest users in the land. Thanks.0
