Thank you, thank you for all thinking of me

Well the news wasn't good at all, it is Myelomeningocele along with hydrocephalus, they said of the worse kind.

We have an apt to see a neurosurgeon again tomorrow, although i don't understand why.

They was told that the baby would be severly handicapped and have problems in life.

I am so sorry to hear!!!! I know no words will offer enough support. The question that pops into my head - how they did not notice this at 12 week scan??? If it is such a sever case, they should have seen something then, shouldn't they?

Please be strong for your daughter - I am sure she needs you...

    Hello

I have looked after lots of children who have myelomeningocele and secondary hydrocephalus and it can be treated with no further problems. Please contact Asbah before your meeting tomorrow - you can do it on your daughters behalf and I promise you will be glad you did.

Please try not to worry - It's not a great diagnosis but I think to tell you the baby will be disabled is very distressing and how can they tell. We had a Mum on the ward just this weekend with a little girl who she was told she should terminate at the 20 week scan (had spina bifida with hydrocephalus). She decided against it and now had a 4 year old who has numb feet and a shunt for the hydrocephalus.

    Thinking of you all x

head is in a mess at the moment, but they said that

    Its in the L3
that the child will be able to crawl but will be in a wheelchair later on, that there will be problems with the bowls and back passage.

The baby would need an operation straight away and one again a few days later, it would then be in and out of hospital for it's life, brain damage was mentioned and also they said that some children can also be born with down syndrome.

And there would have to be some type of operation on the babies head.

Chris - hugs x- I have been following your thread hoping for better news but couldn't find the right words to post - make sure you all get the support and advice you need x

Ginvz't - likely a 12 week dating scan would not be able to pick this up - it is mainly for purposes of dating the pregnancy and the sonographer is not specifically looking for abnormalities - this is the reason for the 20 week scan

What dreadful news. I hope you get some answers and support from the neurologist.

The 12 week scan is a dating scan, not an anomoly scan. the 12 week scans checks for a heartbeat and then measures growth to give a delivery date.

the 20 week anomoly scan is FAR more detail (as the fetus is much larger) and checks the heart in detail, as well as the development of other organs.

Very sorry to hear about this. There isn't anything anyone can say except that your daughter is lucky to have you with her. But be sure and look after yourself as well, you'll need to be strong for her in the coming months whatever she decides to do.

Keep posting as well if it helps to be able to 'talk' about things - you need support as well.

Hi, have only just seen this thread. A similar thing happened to me, told at a 16 week scan that there was possibly a problem, sent to another hospital for a more in-depth scan and told there that my baby had a severe disability which wasn't in his case compatable with life.

We made the decision to teminate the pregnancy.

I also had never given any thought to what a scan was about, thought just a check to double check the baby was growing etc ok. This affected me in future pregnancies (I went on to have 2 healthy children now 9 and 6) as I could never 'relax' until I had had this scan.

I found this orgnaisation extremely supportive and would suggest either you or your daughter contact them.
