Chris...i think you are all dealing with the situation admirably! As you say you are having a laugh over chosing the baby names, and i think that is just what your daughter needs:) I cant decide on which name i like best...Jake or Elliott,i like them both!
My thoughts and prayers are with you all for next week, for a positive outcome. Please keep us updated.

    Hello

I am a nurse on a paediaric neurosurgical ward and would reccomend your daughter contacts Asbah on Monday who are amazing and will be able to offer help and support.
    http://www.asbah.org

They are brilliant - we advise many of our families to contact them.

Please try not to worry - Spina Bifida can seem very scary but there is lots of support and help out there for you all.

Please keep us all posted x Alison x

You've had some good advice I can;t really add to, but it's a shame your daughter didn;t realise that the 20-week scan is not a scan to tell you the sex, but officially an 'anomaly scan' at which they check the baby for various soft markers that may indicate a possible disability.

She should have been given leaflets that explained all the scans and test to her, and would therefore have been better preapred for the possibility of something like this.

Ultimately, a possibility doesn;t mean the baby will definitely have x or y illness, and even if it does that doesn;t mean the baby won;t have a full and lovely life.

I hope she can feel better about this soon, and get some help and support as she has the various tests done.

Thank you for those lovely replies, it is hard at the moment, because we have decided not to tell anyone, thought we would wait till after the scan tomorrow.

Alison i've seen that page thanks for that, they are busy today, but i will pass it on to them.

Guess they was just expecting the 20 week scan to say all was ok,

I think when they 1st told us you expect the very worse, but we can't do anything and have to wait till tomorrow.

Sleep is a nightmare, not managed a full night yet, well thanks guys off to do a days work,.

my friends son has spina bifida, he has a turned in foot, that is the only physical sign people see, and most people don't even realise.
He does have bladder and bowel issues but not obviously so, he self catherterises to pass water, and needs laxatives to go.
his mind works just fine and he can keep up with everyone else in the playground.
I feel so angry they have left your daughter like this, I would consider a complaint.

Saint-Chris, I've just seen the thread, hugs to you. I don't tell anyone this, but couldn't not share with you as you seem so worried. I have spina bifida occulta - it is a mild form of SB (just a couple of vertebrae are affected) and has no outward symptoms.

I am totally normal in every way, the only difference is that the doc advised me not to do anything that would strain my back i.e. heavy lifting. But that is sensible advice for anyone. I have no other symptoms whatsoever. I also know a guy with 'full' SB, he has only the mildest symptoms and has a totally full life. Obviously everyone is different but I just wanted to share my experience with you. Please do not worry.

I hope all goes well today x
