  • Hi guys

well done to all the new runners! it really is the most efficient calorie burner you can find!

i've done the great north run (half marathon) last year but pretty much slacked off after that. however i am now back with a vengence and got 5K Race for Life on Sunday.

if you havent already check out https://www.runnersworld.co.uk. It has lots of FREE advice for beginners on running style, gear, training, nutrition, stretching etc

    keep at it!

Eeek I just typed a nice long reply and seem to have lost it! Arrgh.

But thanks for the links - the book is still on delay though, I called the publishers and it should be a few weeks.

You make the Thames sound v inviting.

I bought a knee support today as my knee is still feeling v sore - especially stair climbing. Am debating whether or not to skip tomorrow and then start Week 5 again on Monday.

And thanks crazyscientist for the link. I got side tracked there for ages!

I bought my book today from Ottokars . They also had a copy in WH Smiths..

After Dr Who I am going to sit down and have a read through.

Feeling very tempeted to do another run this evening as went to all you can eat buffet with the kids so I wouldn't have to cook tonight.

I am just sitting here trying to get myself cooled down enough to shower and I have been back 20 minutes. It was my week 5 Friday run and I am exhausted...it was my hardest run ever, I don't know if walking on Wednesday made today harder? And I don't know how I will ever manage week 6 when it jumps to 2 minute runs! I can't think about it yet :O) But I had real problems regulating my breathing today and my feet felt sore. Will have a nice long soak tonight.

there was a (very similar) running plan in the free asda magazine a few years back ('from couch potato to marathon runner' it was called..or there abouts :D) which said that there is nothing wrong with repeating a week twice (ie doing week four again next week) if you do not feel that you are physically ready to move on yet. the most important thing is to listen to your body and not push yourself too far, too quickly.

keep at it, but keep within your limits

A word of warning for all those ruuners out there trying to lose weight. For every mile run you burn off approx 100 calories(can't be exact because it depends on many factors such as wind resistance, incline angle, bodyweight etc) but if we take 100 cals/mile then it would take 2 miles to burn off an average sized chocolate bar or about 8 miles for a KFC Colonel's Meal. So be careful about overestimating how much energy you use up when you exercise as you still need to control your diet. Don't think that you have earned that burger just cause you have had a nice 10 or 15 minute run.

Thanks for the heads up Thor - I have read a whole thread on that on the runnersworld website. It seems so unfair LOL I have started keeping bottles of water around the house and swig from those as much as I can. I also read bananas are good for emergency snacks. But I have noticed a big increase in my appetite in the mornings.

And trinnylilac, my run today was awful....everything was against me this morning. I just got in, instead of my usual high of completion I sat and had a cry. I can't do week 6 - I just can't do 2 minute stretches of running. I managed 2 mins running then walking twice but couldn't do a third - about 20 minutes in I came home...

I had the wrong bra on which kept slipping off my shoulder (my own stupid fault for forgetting to dig out my sports bras last night) then it started peeing down with rain as I was already feeling sorry for myself. Overall I managed 20 minutes but only about 6 of those running. Will not give up but felling really blah.

Why does every other runner I see look so graceful and like they are gliding up the road effortlessly while I look like a bad sketch from Little Britain's Fat Fighters??

Self pity over. WIll get back at it Wednesday with vigor.

A friend just sent me this link. She uses it for finding routes in London but it does areas outside of London as well.

What ever you do don't give up. Why not go back to week 5 for another week with the last run being 2 mins.

I had a rough time today too with week 4. My other half is on a weeks course so I have the 4 kids to look after on my own. The 3 older ones are at school but I have the baby with me all day. I took her for the first time running with her in her pram and it nearky killed me. I actually got half way and thought I can't do it and I very almost walked home.

I did keep up and managed to complete my session but I would say it has put me off.

Day off tomorow and then I will go for it again on Friday. Chin up I am banking on you to finish the course so I can't give up xxx

I can't believe I've only just spotted this thread. After being told I wouldn't be able to do the "Race for Life" run by my mother and bf I decided to enter it. I've been training since Feb following there plan, I'm doing with a friend which is great motivate and we've raised a good amount of money.

We take it at our own pace so if we feel we need to do x amount longer then the plan then we do. I'm currently on 7 mins run and 3 walking 3 times on any surface so I'm chuffed. I'm looking forward to being able to run 15 mins without stopping! I've even started riding my bike to work on Saturdays too!!

But I've found myself to be sooooooo hungery!! I've been making hooge salads daily for the last weeks, but they don't fill me up. I'm not a breakfast eating person as that's not helping and I work evenings so tend to snack or not eat my dinner til gone 10pm!!!

Anyhoo.. you lot keep going.. I had serious knee pains when I started but managed to run it out (after shocking my knees into reminding them what they could do!!). My Lidl (don't laff) trainers are so comfy alongwith my running socks and jacket. I've invested in some jogg proof headphoones and my and my friend just run to tunes!!

I've ranted on far too much.. but I will be watching this post with interest!!!
