Well I started off with the 1 min walk 1 min run.. and never thought I'd be doing 3 miles!! I had to walk for a bit as my running partner hurt her ankle.. I think I prob walked max 8 mins.. so didn't do too bad as there was a huge hill included too! My thighs really ache today!!!

REad yesterday about a great new exercise programme called "power pramming" which was set up by someone to enable mums to exercise with their babies - try looking at powerpramming.co.uk or just put power pramming into google. They set up originally in London but from what I read she is trying to help people set up groups all over the UK.
    Nice to save.

If there is one thing I can recommend to someone who is starting to run, it is don't be afraid to walk. Set a distance/time (say twenty minutes/half an hour). And allow yourself to run and walk the route. The mistake most first time runners make (myself included) is trying to go too fast too soon. Even during the walking bits your heart rate will be raised and you will get enough benefit from it. As time goes on, decrease the walking and increase the running until you can run the route. Then you can start looking at lengthening the route or working on speed. All the best: I have never been fitter (or trimmer) than since i quite the gym and started to run.

These multi week plans are good but the tricky thing sounds to be that 3-4 week period. The problem is that you are all getting better at running and the improvements don't seem as obvious, which can be a little depressing. The best thing to do at this stage is to find a little route and time yourself on it. Write down the time and run this route regularly and try to beat your previous times. You will be surprised how this will make you more determined when out running and also on those days where you get to the end and you feel like it was awful you may well be surprised at how you've run quicker.

Also set yourself a target, such as a 3 mile fun run or a more ambitious 10k, and make sure you tell everyone you are going to run this will give you the incentive to keep training when it all gets a bit much.

For the runners who have asthma, try asking your doctor for Symbicort, this is an inhaler that keeps the airways open nicely for 12 hours and really does make running easier, I know this as an asthma sufferer.

Finally always warm up and warm down, take water with you and wear PROPER running shoes. I took up running 6 years ago and have since run 14 half marathons and 1 London Marathon. I hate every minute of it but I sure feel better afterwards.

Remember pain is just weakness leaving the body.

Well done K9 that is impressive and thanks to the rest of you for the encouragement - it all really helps; especially these last few days, it has been so hard to get motivated so early in the morning and with all that rain.

I don't mind the walk run, in fact after 6 weeks I still find it hard to run 2 minutes but I am perservering. Week 5 was my worst, I found it really tough. I am working towads Race for Life in July and find it great having a goal. I can see my progress on the path near my house...initially I could do about two lamp posts, now I can all the way down the path and around the corner :O)

And well done smegster, that's an impressive tally.

    Hi all,

After reading all of this thread, I'm feeling quite inspired and ready to join you.
My lunch still feels heavy in my stomach at the moment, but later on today I will try and make myself go for a run.
I started the 10 week course about a year ago, but gave up at about week 4 (it was winter and I got fed up of running in the snow)

    Wish me luck.

Hi Starlorna - please join us - I need all the encouragement I can get!

Week 7 was very hard for me indeed, I found the jump to 2 minutes of walking and running v hard indeed. And I couldn't get out for a run yesterday so I am repeating week 7 this week - can't imagine upping the stakes to 3 minute jogs this week!

Anyone else still going? I got my first copy of Runners World magazine (3 for £1 on Grab It) so will try and get back at it!
