Great thread and thanks for all the inspiration everyone, especially Claudie!!!
I used to be really fit, always playing football etc but since I moved house and got a new job, i've done literally NO EXERCISE for about 8 or 9 months!!
I feel so bad and am so unfit even though I have retained my athletic look so everyone assumes i'm still fit.
I also noticed that being a slob meant that I became really tired - would fall asleep most nights about 7:00 for an hour or two then wake up and then not be able to sleep for the night then until gone midnight!!
Last week I stupidly signed up for a half marathon relay (4 people do 3 miles each) and so thought i'd better start training. I can now run 1 mile in 9mins 50secs (mix of on and off road) and will start extending that so that I can do the 3 miles and after that I hope to carry on for the future!!!
Looks like I found this thread at the perfect time!!!

If anyone has a PocketPC PDA with GPS, they might want to have a look at this link:

Tracks your time, distance, speed etc, would be very useful for me, shame there is no version for Palm!!!

smegster wrote:These multi week plans are good but the tricky thing sounds to be that 3-4 week period. The problem is that you are all getting better at running and the improvements don't seem as obvious, which can be a little depressing. The best thing to do at this stage is to find a little route and time yourself on it. Write down the time and run this route regularly and try to beat your previous times. You will be surprised how this will make you more determined when out running and also on those days where you get to the end and you feel like it was awful you may well be surprised at how you've run quicker.
Also set yourself a target, such as a 3 mile fun run or a more ambitious 10k, and make sure you tell everyone you are going to run this will give you the incentive to keep training when it all gets a bit much.
For the runners who have asthma, try asking your doctor for Symbicort, this is an inhaler that keeps the airways open nicely for 12 hours and really does make running easier, I know this as an asthma sufferer.
Finally always warm up and warm down, take water with you and wear PROPER running shoes. I took up running 6 years ago and have since run 14 half marathons and 1 London Marathon. I hate every minute of it but I sure feel better afterwards.
Remember pain is just weakness leaving the body.
Can the doctor give me anything to stop my face glowing like a beacon when I go running/walking? lol
For some reason when i exercise, all the blood goes strait to my face (especially when stopping) making me briiigggghhhht red!!....then i become concious of it and feel embarrased...and turn even redder (if it was possible to go redder)
Make up won't cover it as it just gets sweated off. I like exercise and really wanna go running to keep in shape but this is the one thing putting me off.
I know it may sound like im joking about it but seriously its getting me down. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Helen x btw im not massively overweight or unfit so thats not the reason!love my little man he is amazing :j0 -
whhoo hooo so glad I found this thread, I want to shift my baby tum and get back to being fit again (used to be very active before I had this baby) I was planning on a 2 mile run with the dog and some choice music with my MP3 player, until I get fit and then going round our local lake for some all terrain running so that my body doesnt get used to that run, then maybe some weights.
I was also thinking of getting one of those cycle machines that you can use sat down, I can use it at the computer then. I am also doing a striptease workout routine (ohhh errr missus) for toning, had my forst go of it the other nights and its great fun, hopfully the ovilty wont wear off like it did when I did tae bo.
I am hoping to drop a dress size by my holiday in september, so I am measuring calories and aiming to do what I have said above. Maybe you lot can give me the kick up the jacksy I might need along the wayWork like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0 -
Hullo all.
Like others, I too have been reading this post for a while but have yet to start running. I'm very overweight but am dieting and the weight is coming off. I've started to exercise regularly (swimming, aerobics and aqua aerobics) but would love to be able to run as it's something that you can take everywhere (i may be moving away from my local leisure centre soon) and that is useful for so many sports (i used to love playing basketball but the running kills me now).
I was thinking about what a couple of you said about running shoes. What is it that makes them running shoes instead of just trainers? I don't want to spend too much money in case i hate running (i know i'll hate it initially but i'll persevere for now).
I used to think that by paying out for a gym membership that the money would be a motivator but i hate the gym so much that it never worked! I don't want the same thing to happen with this.
Do you think running in my old trainers will really affect how hard it is? If it is a big deal then what sort of running shoes should i look for (i may have to wait for some sales to buy anything)?
Thanks all. Good luck with the running!0 -
If you do want to get some new running shoes, you can look at the dicount boards or http://hotukdeals.com/index.phtml to see if there are any discount codes. I am currently looking at addtiions direct, they have some trainers for £12.99 but on hotdeals there is a £10 off code so they will only cost £2.99 plus P&P I refuse to buy a pair for £50 or more just so I can get them dirty down the biketrack lolWork like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0

If you already have some trainers, would advise going in them the first few times because lets face it, starting off, you'll probs be walking most of the time anyway!
Then if you like it, get down to a specialist running / sports shop and they will assess your running style and see "how you run" and match you up with a pair of trainers to match.
Basically steer well clear of JJB Sports, All Sports, JD Sports etc who sell fashion trainers Nike Air springs and air bubbles etc!!! They are not running trainers, they are fashion trainers!!!

Well my run today didn't go to well, I managed to run a mile complete until we rounded a corner where there is a farm and he lets his dongs wonder free, the little sods attacked us and went for my dog (I am thinking of reporting him, many people use that track on occasion) then my dog fell in the lake when we stopped for a minute, rescued her, then she went harrassing the ducks so had to chase her round the lake away from them  I think I need to find a new route :rolleyes:Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0

Thanks Morph3us, you made me smile !! Good luck with the training.
And Helen, no idea why you turn so red, I am not good with anything medical but I would say try not to even think about it as a bad thing but as a good thing - you are exercising and that is great. May be easier said than done I know; but I know when I see the "proper" fit people running I just think how lucky they are to be able to run!
Iwantto save that is just bad luck.. Sounds like my first ever run when everything conspired against me. You do need a new route..then again maybe the dogs would make you run faster!
And Jen well done on getting started - please join us! I need all the motivation I can get. Highly recommend the Running Made Easy book - it is very motivational; you may be able to borrow it from your local library.
My first week (listen to me sounding so grand - I am only on week 8 !) I ran with my old fashion trainers and could feel my feet burning and it just felt really uncomfortable. All the advice I have been given is to try on several different types of runners to see which suit your running style. Some have extra cushioing - others higher arches etc. When I was trying them on I could tell straight away which felt right.
This probably expains it better
