So what's more annoying when you run?

    a. A stopwatch that hangs round your neck (and flails about as i attempt to run) but has a big display and big buttons
    b. A comfy wristwatch that has tiny buttons and an ok display

I need something to time the walking/running intervals (i don't have a watch) but can't decide what would be more useful. I'm only getting something cheapy from ebay but don't want to waste too many £s!

    cheers all.

I use a heart rate watch that belongs to my OH - it times laps, steps etc as well but I only ever use it for timing. He bougt it at Tesco.

Personally I can't deal with stuff on my neck...I bought an arm strap from EBay for my Ipod and that is pretty good too.

less than a week to go until exam freedom is mine, and after seeing you all stick at it, i am feeling much more inpsired to get up and go for it :) im starting to grow love handles  , and i want to stop them in their tracks

only thing is - i live in an urban area, and the roads round here are very busy. nearest parks are not really suitable for running. where do you guys run, and what do you find are the pros and cons of different surfaces?

The pavement should really only be used as a last resort. The impact forces are greatest. Best to find a trail, grassy path, park etc. I do my running along the river, nice scenery and easy-ish on the joints. In colder weather, it's the treadmill which can be beneficial for speedwork and figuring out times.

I run down a dirt track, its very uneaven so I have to be careful. I was going to run the full lengh of it but there are quite vicious dogs allowed to run free near the bottom so tonight I took a detor and ran up the big enbankment of the lake and ran round that. I ended up stopping for a few mins this evening as the veiw was amazing, gorgeous sunset, horses galloping in the distance, it was bliss. If its nice again tommorrow I will take a piccy :D I wish I had the camera today.

After I get my fitness back I aim to run the full circut of the lake which is about 5 or 6 mile and all very rugged terrain.

Just incase anyone needs any running gear go to sports soccer. I just tried on the off chance for a cheap pair of running shoes, I got a pair of diadora (really nice ones as well) trainers for £8.99 just put them on now and they are so padded and comfy they are lovely. Also got a pair of jogging pants for £3.99 and a top for £2.09 so got the lot for less than £15 :j

I ordered one of those chair exercise bike thingys from avon the other day and used a £5 off code so I got it for £7 just want to look into getting some ankle and wrist weights.

The Running Made Easy book via Tesco.com is £7.49 with free p&p. I've just ordered mine for delivery on Tuesday approximately. I've been reading this thread and following you all but have yet to pluck up the courage and go out in the big wide world with people staring at me! lol Once I've got the book, I'll digest it :D and then pluck up the courage to venture round the garden a few times I think  :D .

Although it isn't much don't forget to go through Quidco when ordering online.

Go for it Lara! The more the better and we can all encourage each other :O)

I run so early because I have to, but I also like it that there aren't as many cars on the road. And I like to think the neighbours who may be up that early and may see me will think it is a hallucination LOL

I live on quiet a large but quiet residential estate - I run on the walkways and main pavements on a different route each time. I would prefer a track or softer area but I run quite early in the morning, usually alone, so I want to go where it is safe. And I vary my route each day just in case someone thinks the fat bird huffing would make an easy target LOL
