If you don't want to run on your own then you could join up with your local "hash house harriers". If you search for this phrase in Google then you will find "the world hash house harriers home page" listed from there you can easily search for and find your nearest group. We boast that we have a group in almost every city in the world. Each group is run voluntarily and all fees (I pay £2.00 a run / week) go towards providing little treats like a free beer at the end of the run.
To wet your apetite the run goes something like this. A different volunteer from the members plans a route (about an hour long) and marks it by placeing blobs of flour or sawdust along the way. Because there are faster and slower runners and even walkers we need a way to slow the faster ones down, so every now and then at a junction of footpaths a large gap is left in the trail. Thus the front runners have to find the way and end up running out and back along several paths while the others catch up. If we still can't keep together then a stop is called by the person who laid the trail where the front runners have to wait for all to catch up. Theres always someone alocated to bring up the rear and often a short cut is included for those who don't want to go so far. Thats the gist but there are many other additions to make it interesting, I find it a real fun time and would never run on my own.

Right people I think i've cracked it!!!

Up until now, I was running 1 mile at a fast(ish) pace because I just cannot physically run slowly!! After the 1 mile (in just over 10 mins) I was dying.

Anyway, last night I tried REALLY hard to run slowly and instead of doing 1 mile in 10 mins, I did 6 minutes, then walked for 2, 6 more and walk for 2, 6 more and walk for 2. I managed to run for 18 minutes in total - may not sound a lot but I am over the moon.

And another bonus, my usual route is down the quiet country road into the village then back along the canal towpath. Last night because I was running a lot further it was great to explore the footpath on the other side of the canal, the views were amazing, I saw loads of wildlife etc etc.

I have high hopes for Sunday now when 4 of us are running a half marathon relay!!!

No I'm no giving up running, just changing my goals. i was going to try to aim for 10 k but i'll be happy now just doing 5 k easily and see how it goes.

The worst bit about the race was that a (soon to be ex) friend with out doing any traning finished just 3 min after me!

K9cuddles losing all that weight as well as getting fit is just terrific...well done! Keep that up and you will be exactly where you want by August.

getcarter why do you think you found it so hard? Was it the weather or were you tired? Maybe your friend was trying to keep pace with you and you helped - a compliment to you.

And a big well done Morph3us and good luck for Sunday, let us know how you do.

I'm still trying my best to crack the 2 minte reps but not giving up.

Armed with my new-ish watch and my slightly complaining OH (well, i did interrupt him watching the A-team!) I went out last night to scope potential 'running' routes. Have found some good places to go and OH was so concerned about me running through the more secluded parts that he's going to come with me :D

Have scheduled first (maybe last :o ) outing tomorrow morning. Suspect I'll bore you with the details once i've recovered.
  • I happen to me married to a marathon runner (yikes) but a novice to running myself. The best tip she gave me was to breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth, but making sure that you are breathing from the belly rather than the ribs. This really worked for me as previously I used to gasp for air and felt like my ribs were going to explode. I also make a point of always breathing out on my left foot - which apparently helps you to avoid getting the stitch (and has worked for me). Finally, she helped me realise that I was running way too fast... just slow it down!

Well done Jen - good luck tomorrow! You can do it...

And thanks neversay - will give that a try if I can remember it - it sounds like a lot of concentrating and right now I'm not sure if I could run and think LOL but I will give it a go.

This morning was a nightmare..last week I finally did a few days of 2 minute rotation but knew i wasn't ready for the 3 minutes. Had the worst hayfever eyes ever this morning and sore feet (I walked the length of Silverstone twice the weekend, stupidly in bad shoes) and just couldn't get in a flow. Managed about 20 minutes out but only about 5 running in total before I gave in and came home. I am going to rest my tender tootsies and go again Wednesday with full motivation!

And triiny lilac and ms london if you are still there - thanks again for starting this thread!! You have started a new trend and I for one am v grateful :O)
