I wanna learn how to run !

Thanks Jiffy - I have a little waterproof zip up jacket from Regatta Outlet (says waterproof and breatheable) which wasn't too bad but I think as this week's reward I may go out and look for some proper leggings, I wore my lycra 3/4 length trackies and my ankles are both cold and wet!
Run for life scary but I guess you can't be too careful! Our area is pretty safe I think but I only walk/run around a residential built up area, I avoid paths, parks etc. if I am on my own.
And Stephen a ramble sounds like great exercise to me. In all seriousness though, remember the warning to always check with your GP before starting an exercise programe. I am a worrier and get a little worried when you said racing heart :O)
And can I just add - just back from my first run of week 5 - I have been back for 10 minutes and I can't stop "glowing" (i.e. sweating like a pig!!).The smallest deed is greater than the grandest intention ~ Anonymous0 -

Thanks. Don't worry, at the nagging of my parents, I am going today

And the verdict of the doc is that I have nothing to worry about - blood pressure and heart seem normal. However, as my Mum has had thyroid problems in the past, I am to go back on Thursday for an ECG and a blood test. Joy - needles!
But he said there was nothing to stop me exercising, as long as I take it slowly to begin with, so there is no stopping me now!Feel free to check up on me though, to make sure I am doing it.

Hi all newbie runners. When you all get into your stride so to speak why not sign up for a fun run.Its a great goal to aim for.It keeps you motivated and gives you a real incentive to go that extra mile.Every year we all travel down to portsmouth for the great south run.Its a flat 10 mile run through some lovely surroundings. It makes a great healthy weekend and there is a real carnival feel to it.My six year old twin girls do the junior 1 mile run the day before so its great to get everyone involved in the event. There are loads of different runs up and down the country throughout the year try www.onrunning.com for more info.Keep up the good work people:T0

Well I have just come back from 1st run of week 3 .. And it wasn't that bad.
Unfortunatly had to take the other half and he is super fit. He really couldn't get his head round the fact that you could walk after your running part.
One thing though I haven't lost any weight, Can anyone explain why as I have gone from doing absolutly no exercise to running 3 times a week and walking to work .
I don't feel I can cut my food down too much as I then lack energy , anyone else the same.0 -
Stephen glad all is ok. No excuses now you will have to join us.
And Urban thanks for the kind words. I am doing the plan as a build up to Race for Life but intend to keep it up even when that is completed. I can't believe I am really enjoying this. I have bookmarked the web site for later.
And Trinny are you taking your measurements? I have only lost 4 lbs and I have been dieting as well - I would have thought I would lose more but I have lost 2 inches from my chest and 2 from my waist which I am pleased with. Most of all though I am pleased with my overall fitness level.
Week One I really couldn't do 15 seconds of running - by week 2 and 3 my first minute got me to the end of my path - now my first minute comfortably gets me to the path and up the road. It is all progress. Slow but I try telling myself worth it.
I have found my appetite has increased but I am really trying to add a lot more fruit to my day and I have been having cereal for breakfast in an attempt to stay full for longer.
Good luck :O)The smallest deed is greater than the grandest intention ~ Anonymous0 -
I didn't measure myself as I couldn't find a tape measure. I will do this today actually as I would like to know if there is some progress to body as well as fitness. I managed to get one of those paper tape measures from Ikea last week.
Definatly improving on the fitness though like you Claudie
and Jiffy I also find it much easier in the morning.
Another tip I also read about last week somewhere was
A study was done whch showed that people eating a mint sweet a few minutes before exercising worked that little bit harder.
Whether this is true or not I don't know but I have bought a family packet of low sugar polos in case it is .
Also meant to say that this website https://www.runnersworld.co.uk an online version of the magazine has some really interesting items on it . There is a whole section for beginner's running.0 -
What a great thread!!
If some of you dont mind being candid, can I ask if you are heavy or just unfit before trying this?
I have been on a diet since the start of the year (slow progress, 1.5 stone in 5 months) which has been based purely on food intake, ie no exercise. I am 6ft and weigh 18 stone (everyone says I dont look it, like that helps) and need to start exercising because I am not at the age where I need to think about my helath as well as my general weight. I am wondering if I will be able to do this, or if I should start by cycling instead?
I love the look of the running diary and hope to post back my results here. I am also hoping some of you are in the same boat as me and are having success.0 -
In my case I am unfit and overweight (13st 8lb this morning on the scales). At 5'8" I should be about 11-11st7lb. Watching what I eat is helping to an extent, but I need more to help me shed the pounds and get my fitness back up. Being able to walk 12miles is not enough, I need to be able to do things without getting out of breath.
