Gonna get myself a new pair of Trainers and do my 'annual' try running again and see if ankle pain returns.
Nights are lighter so thats at least one excuse out of the way

we did it! our first run on a non moving surface :D and it wasnt half as bad as i was expecting (the treadmill has obviously done me some good!) the only bad thing is not knowing the distance of the area we covered

anyway, my right knee really isnt thanking me for my more active lifestyle. i was wondering if anyone had any experience of running in a knee support? do they help or hinder?

Well done - don't forget if you want to measure the distance you can use Run London website for a route calculator.

I used a knee support but found it really awkward - I ended up putting it on for a bit after I cooled down. I don't know if it really worked or it was all in my mind but I did feel a bit better. A friend of mine does run with one regularly - maybe you just need to get used to it?

The current issue of Zest has a runners special banner - not sure if it is similar to last years guide - has anyone seen it?

really proud of myself for going out for a run today, inspite of the less than cheerful weather.

dragged OH along as my normal running partner wasnt available, and i think he had underestimated my fitness levels a bit :D am really going to have to knuckle down now and make a point of running three times a week, every week, as per the 'programme' otherwise race for life at the end of june is going to be a very long course, and i'd love to run as much of it as humanly possible

    hows everyone else's training going?

i had a look for zest magazine in borders today, but the may edition only had one page that seemed particularly relevant to running  will have to have a look on the website...

For info I thought it might be worth mentioning that this is only £6.59 in WHSmith's (http://www.whsmith.co.uk/whs/go.asp?isbn=1861057032&DB=220&Menu=Books) plus free delivery to a store and an extra 7% off if you go through Quidco :D.

I run about 20 miles a week, and I can assure you it takes time to build up to that, so take your time, relax and enjoy the process. Running is really fun, and if possible never let a sunny day go by without at least running. You'll find it'll make it much easier for you to enjoy the process.

I have no idea what this "tight" feeling in your chest might be, other than it being psychosomatic. If not, check your sports bra - it might not fit you very well. If it's not that then more than likely your upper body is too tense when you run. Your arms and shoulders should be relaxed and your posture should be loose and relaxed.

Also, there's a warmup period in any run that's part physical, and part psychological. The physical part you take care of by doing light aerobics, then stretching properly, then running slowly for a little while. This process takes about 10 minutes before your body is fully warmed up.

Also, you should be running on an empty stomach. For obvious reasons its a terrible idea to eat before exercise if you're trying to lose weight. First thing in the morning on an empty stomach is 3 times more effective than later on in the day.

It takes time for your body to burn up its glucose supply and then begin the fat burning process. The changeover can be quite tough, and it depends on your metabolism how efficiently this happens. That might be one of the reasons you find it so tough. Don't worry, as your metabolism and general fitness level increases that becomes so much easier.

For me, the first 20 minutes of any run is the toughest and sometimes I feel like giving up. But after that, it's so easy and I can run for 10 miles. In fact, that happened today. 5 minutes into my run I badly wanted to give up - I pushed through that, and started to feel better and carried on for another 55!

From a psychological perspective it's best to just accept that the first 20 minutes of any run will be the worst and if you can just relax and do your best to enjoy that your body will thank you for it later. You'll be surprised just how far you can run if you're willing to just tough it out for a while. Listening to good music can do wonders to keep your mind focused on the pleasure aspect of running, and not the tiring part.

Obviously though if you feel like something is seriously going wrong with your body, then stop!

Also: Research "Interval Training". It's far more effective for fat burning than regular jogging.

I found a book in a charity shop called `The loonyness of the long distance runner` about a couch potato who decided to do the New York marathon. Worth a read and very funny.
Ran in the rain this morning - first time for ages. Tried a new route through local fields until I came to a sign saying the bull was in some field or other. Didn`t dare risk it, so found a different route. Only doing 3 to 5 miles a time, but leg getting better at last.
