I run 40mins last night.. well chuffed!!! I think the fact I was getting a new motorbike that evening kept me motivated!! My shin splints have finally gone after 7 weeks!!!Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 092

Really pleased with myself
.
My new years resolution was to start running. I have been going twice a week and doing 1 mile. Last week however, I managed to do 2 miles (non stop) yay! I felt really good after. I'm going tomorrow and will try my best to do 2 miles again.

its such a brill feeling isnt it? that stage when you start to notice that its getting easier (even though its still far from easy)
we worked out tonight that we ran/walked best part of the 5k required for the race for ife, and i feel sooo much fitter with every run. its fab feeling like i can go that tiny little bit further, and i dont have to stop so often for a breather. it feels like im making progress, and from a motivational point of view that pays dividends!know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -
Hi,
I just started out my training in prep for this years RFL. 1st session was ok...managed 1 min fast walking/2 mins jogging alternating this for about 30 mins...but session 2...I found much harder??!! I could barely breathe! Whats this all about!? I thought its meant to get easier not harder!! If it wasn't for charity I would be throwing in the towel im that fed up!!!

Just read back through some of the earlier posts and noticed some of you saying you started out with 90 secs walk 60 secs run...whats this plan and do you think it would be best to start again, following this one instead of the race for life one? Im just thinking it would maybe be more beneficial to me to start abit easier and build up rather than go straight in for the kill lol?
Also...I can't find the podcasts for running on itunes..I click it but nothing happens!?

hi helen, welcome to the gang
the sad but true fact is that it will take a few sessions of feeling hot, sweaty, unfit, uncoordinated and generally useless  before you find the pattern of running that works for you.
i started out runnning on a treadmill, which is very different to running on the ground. i'd set a time limit, and try to run for that time. now im running outdoors, i either run for as far as i can, or i set my sight on something in the distance and run to that - the next tree/ lamp post, as far as the pub.. whatever really.
if you are struggling, i really cannot recommend running made easy highly enough. its very motivational and a fab read. your local library should have a copy in the sports section.
you just have to keep at it. no, its not easy at first, but it does get better and you do actually start to enjoy it once you notice that you are making progress. i feel so alive now when i run. its almost euphoric. not quite better than sex, but im working in it :rotfl: (now that *would* motivate us to get our trainers on, eh ladies)
dont try and run too far, too fast. a nice slow jog - just enough to keep you moving - is all you need to break you in an dbuild up your stamina. try run 2/ walk 2, or walk 1, run 1... whatever is in your range of ability, there's no right or wrong programme... and build it up from there. leave a rest day between each run to give your body chance to recover. dont forget to gently stretch your muscles after each run to minimise aches and risk of injury. drink plenty of water before during and after a run (sip it whilst running otherwise you'll give yourself a stitch) to keep yourself hydrated; this is especially important now the hotter weather is coming. dont run on a full or an empty stomach - its hard work!
most important of all - good luck!know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -
Hi,
Thanks to pavlovs dog for the advice and warm welcome
I went out again last night for another bash...yeah I know you are meant to leave a day inbetween runs but I was really keen to go so that gotta be a good thing eh??!
I managed to fathom out the Itunes running podcast thing so I downloaded week 1 to my ipod and off I went...
Managed the whole 30mins alternating between 90 secs fast walk and 60 secs run (well, jog) and felf fab after! :j Looked bloody awful when I got home though...looked soooooooooooooo sweaty, red and ...unfit!! Oh and my tracky pants kept slipping down as I ran lmao so had to run while keep oiking them back up lol lol lol

Helloooooooooooo is nobody running anymore??
Im getting much better..can run for about 4 mins at a time now and I stop and then brisk walk cos I want to and don't wanna over do it rather than cos I can't breathe and feel like Im gonna keel over lol
My knees hurt abit though, even when im not out on a run. I must land really heavy on my poor legs and my knees soak up all the impact. Ive bought some elastic knee supports so hope they help cos I don't wanna have to give it up not now im getting somewhere!!
Anyone have any advice for me?

I've had problems with my joints from doing various sports and can say that the best thing I've found is the old remedy of Cod Liver Oil. I take the capsuals so they don't taste too bad.0

Ive been running too. Over the last week ive been 3times, having two full days rest in between. Its roughly 2miles.
But im still getting loads of uncomfortable Pain in my Right Ankle. : - (
I stop a couple of times and walk a little
Think its running on an incline.
I gotta keep trying to make the effort, no matter how small the distance is and the pain0
