    How's everybody else doing?

    Hi,

    Im doing great too!

The week leading up to Race for life,we(me,daughter and a friend) were managing to run/walk the 3miles in 35-40 mins..running for 4-5mins at a time..then on the actual day..wow,we really suprised ourselves..we ran (ok,jogged!) the whole 3 miles in 32 mins!! I just cannot believe we kept on going all the way round!

Then last night we went out again (were keeping the running going cos we luv it!) and did 3miles in 29mins! Again,we just kept running.

So now we know we are capable of running for 3 miles were concentrating on trying to pick up the pace abit gradually and decrease the time little bit at a time.
I feel so much fitter. I havn't lost weight, which is really discouraging, but I think my muscles are firmer..so hopefully the weightloss will start once ive built bigger stronger muscles and my metabolic rate has raised.

Anyone know wheres selling the cheapest copy of the book 'running made easy' at the mo cos I really want to buy it as my local library is rubbish..they don't have it!

    Keep at it everyone!

Ive been doin very good wiv my running, the last few weeks been going regular. Started off doing 2miles with 2days break in between. Now I am down to 1 Day Break.
I went out on Sunday, not realised how hot it was 22degrees. Think the humidity training did me well. as my nxt trip i pushed myself and knocked more time off my Distance.
Managed to know it down gradually from 19 to 17minutes.

Fingers crossed my bad ankle doesnt come back. I will keep trying to run my 2miles ish faster, than maybe slow down and increase the distance

Do remember that unless you are running loads and loads of miles you are not going to lose too much weight purely through jogging. An average person will use around 100 calories per mile and when you consider that a pound of fat equals 3500 calories of energy you can see that you would have to run 5 miles a day every day to lose a pound of fat per week. Also jogging will not build larger muscles as it is not really a resistance exercise. If you wanted to increase muscle then weight training is the way to go but that will likely put weight on as muscle is denser than fat.
The reason I run and why you are benefitting by doing the same is the fact that you are getting fitter and this is a good thing. If you want to lose weight as well then you would have to cut down on the calories you consume or put in a huge amount of exercise. For me, if I ate whenever I felt tempted to I would have to run to the moon and back to control my weight so I have to constantly watch what I eat. It is very hard to avoid overeating but I have managed to do so for a couple of decades and am consequently happy with my weight.

fwiw Try to go a bit further, not a bit faster- the fitness benefits are better if you manage around 40 minutes per session, ie keeping your heart pumping at a suitable heart rate for that amount of time.

I wondered this, if beating your Time was increasing your fitness or going slower but running for longer.

My opinion was that if you could improve on your existing time, when you attempt the longer distance, you would be more capable of doing it?

Suppose its swings and roundabouts if your plan is extending your distance eventually.

I myself only do 18minute sessions at present :-(

sadly I am out of running all together at the moment as I had to have an op on my back a few weeks ago :o I am going to physio regularly and have been advised to take up pilates in a few weeks time.

I did find when I was running that I had to be even more careful of what I ate as running really increased my appetite but I wasn't burning off that many more calories - seems unfair but I know my fitness levels overall really improved.

And strangely enough - even though I was no Paula Radcliffe I did enjoy the freedom of running and am thinking of going back to it as my long term goal.

Good luck to everyone doing RfL in the next few weeks!!

    Hi everyone,

I just discovered this thread. I too have discovered the book Running Made Easy. I didn't think I would ever be able to run as my shins get sore quite quickly. But I invested in a pair of decent running shoes, the advice from the people in the shop was great, looked at how I walked and marched etc to give me advice on the best type of shoe.

I am now on Week 4 of the plan, my shins occasionally ache but are improving week by week as they get used to the exercise, just back from my first session of week 4 and they don't hurt at all.

I'm just so pleased with myself and hopefully I'll get some help from here to keep motivated.

    Good luck everyone.:T :T

  • hi everybody, although not new to this site i am newly registered so i can get my two pennies in!

    so here goes!

i'm a big lad (was 17stone now 15.2 ish) and i quit smoking in october '06 so i could get fit and save money of course, i suffered very badly for months with shin pain and chest pain and any other kind of pain my body could produce as a result of years of abuse, it took me along time to be even run a mile non stop!
As i write this now i am currently recoperating from a run this afternoon which enatailed 7miles of cross country fun! i even got my time down to 70 minutes, which considering the terrain aint bad!! (the first few miles are virtually verticle, seriously)
i guess my point is that whatever your goals stick to them and then reap the rewards!
personally i am hoping to maybe make some new friends through running and maybe enter a race or two.

    keep on runnin'!!!
