Aliasojo. I usually agree with you but in this case you have just branded all of us who wish to avoid being the subjet of gossip or rumours, as I would certainly have been in my office if I had appeard with Oxfam carrier bags, as shallow & trivial. Neighbours, colleagues and even friends can all revert to being gossips or worse still playground bullies under mob-mentality. I'm not saying it's right or fair, but it happens & we have to accept our friends faults as we have to accept our own. Sadly not everyone can assume a "live-and-let-live" attitude to their comtempories & peers. What is worng with trying to preserve our dignity & avoid such situations.

I apologise Lillibet, to you and anyone else I may have offended.

This subject brought back strong feelings for me. I am opinionated on this matter because I feel deeply about it.

You mention your work colleagues and say that you would have been the subject of gossip or rumours if you had opted to carry an Oxfam bag, so for this reason you chose not to do so.

So in my opinion, by taking this course of action, all you are doing is allowing these ignorant shallow people's opinions continue to negatively affect you. My stance would be to take pride in the fact I have more between my ears than an unnatural interest in the relevance of a carrier bag name.

However, I do appreciate that not everyone wants to lock horns with others over stuff like this.

I feel it's very sad that our affluent society is concerned with pathetic triviality such as this when there are people who have less but can see past this type of thing and are more appreciative of their lot generally. They may be poorer in material terms but they certainly seem to be richer in other ways.

I understand your desire to avoid awkward or unpleasant situations, therefore I understand your reasons for carrying a more 'correctly' branded bag. However, I do feel that although people who perpetuate this perception are not the cause, they are also not part of the solution either as they allow it to continue, so yes, I have branded you in the same way.

Perhaps if we all stood up and asked others to examine their beliefs and actually deeply think about the views they hold, then perhaps changes could be made and society would be a happier more tolerant place.

Yes, we have to accept our friends faults, but that does not mean we can't encourage them to change for the better.

Again, I do realise I am being quite forthright and outspoken here, I genuinely do not mean to upset anyone, and I genuinely feel sorry if I have angered or offended but I do think I should be able to offer my views, even if others don't agree with my opinion.

    *hangs head in shame*

I'm affraid I too am a 'snob' when it comes to stores. last time hubby was made redundant we had to ship at lidl, I was so ashamed, I could never use their bags. i am about to go down that road again, but I now have a nice strong Sainsburys bag, so I wont feel embarrassed.

    Greenwellies

Lidl charge for their bags, so I won't use them for that reason.

I use whatever bags I have accumulated in the house for this purpose

Where I live, and my family's culture, actually give the feeling if you pay more/shop expensively, you are real idiot. We actually feel better for getting things as cheap as possible whilst retaining quality, as well as saving money.

This board has been a godsend for seeking good deals and money saving:)

the 99p ones? best bags ever :) I keep at least one folded up in my backpack & use them whatever shop I'm in, Tesco yesterday

I've even used them when moving home, brilliant for transporting books & other small but heavy items

sadly I can't claim I'm not embarrassed by some carrier bags. when I bought my mum new slippers recently & I hid the BHS one inside my LIDL bag :o

aliasojo of course you should be able to offer an opinion - it would be a strange world if we all felt the same about things.

I admire your strength too in being able to look beyond the label, as I said earlier it honestly hadn't occurred to me that other people would be interested in where I shop. I'm just so proud whenever I find a real bargain that I blast it from the rooftops no matter whether anyone is interested or not :D

I also admire your stance in making people examine their beliefs, it was attitudes like yours that broke down the walls of racism etc.

You sound like the kind of person I would be proud to call a friend, don't ever change :)

Lillibet I do understand where you are coming from too, you must have to put up with some pretty petty people if their beliefs about people are based on the labels they carry, I bet their lives are not half as rich as yours regardless of how much they own?

Does always make me smile on the tube when you can see the city folk with thier "harrods" bag, with the print almost off though, using it to death. Mind you maybe they are all being green too... ;)
Just as an aside - don't knock Harrods bags - they're great. There's a place in Harrods food hall (also Selfridges and various other locations around the country) called Vom Fass, which sells liqueurs, spirits, oils and vinegars by quantity (albeit in posh bottles which, although you can take them back for refills, have to be bought separately  ) and I go there occasionally for gifts. Last time I was there (last July) I ended up with oodles of small Harrods Food Hall carrier bags because I bought 5 glass bottles and the assistant double-wrapped them in bags for me to protect them! They have been re-used and re-used and are sill going strong, they're just the right size for a lunchbox to take to work, the handles are comfy to hold, and I reckon they'll still be useable long after the fancy green writing's worn off ;)

Ugh, Selfridges bags on the other hand, they're nice quality too but they're bright yellow - and how many outfits do you have that you'd happily accessorise with a bright yellow bag :D

When on holiday in France last summer none of the supermarkets gave out carriers - you were expected to take your own. The French seemed to be happy to take their shopping home in a mixture of reusable bags. I have loads of the 'bags for life' that I use when shopping - I've got a mixture of Tesco, Sainsbury's, Carrefour (sp), Wilko and Waitrose (free from a Food exhibition!) -I don't care what people think!! (I am over 50 though, might have felt differently when I was younger - can't remember now - too much red wine over the years.

aliasojo, apologies. I seem to have put my mouth into gear before engaging brain:o.
You are of course, quite right. However, sometimes it is preferable to me to be shallow and live a quiet life, rather than to take on the fight & try to change the world.
