This was a loooong time ago lynzpower, I'm talking nearly 20 years ago, when Presto first introduced a basic range, and yes I think it did change to Safeway, wasnt the Newcastle one though, was in The Galleries in Washington where I worked, I think the one in Newcastle is now a Morrisons, or was last tiem I heard, its all changed now, I try not to go to The Toon too often just now while I'm trying to save money.

Morrisons, Safeways, Prestos, and first of all, Templetons. That was years agooooooooo. ;) There was William Lows and then they were bought over by Tescos.

I'm looking forward to the day when all supermarkets charge for carriers like they do in Southern Ireland. That will encourage everyone to reuse them & help to stop so many ending up as rubbish in the hedgerows or in landfill.
I use bags for life, have 2 fabulous cotton string bags that hold masses & I also have an M&S shoppers that I paid 99p for, it's incredibly strong & good for heavy bottles & so on.
The only trouble is, I needed a carrier on Saturday to put stuff in for recycling & couldn't find one.

This is a really interesting thread! I genuinely don't understand why people care so much about what other people spend their money on. I constantly hear people being rude about other people because of what they buy (whether it's something cheap or expensive). I have friends who are snobby about people who shop at Aldi or Lidl, but I also know people who criticize others for buying a glossy magazine or a coffee from the coffee-shop. Everyone has a right to spend their own money as they wish. The interesting thing is that people seem to be more judgemental about other peoples' spending habits than what they do in their private life!

As for the carrier bag question I use my Cath Kidston bag that I was given for my birthday when I go to Aldi, although I'm sure there are people that wouild turn up their noses at that too!

Sometimes I wouldn't know a designer label if it jumped up and bit me on the bum :D I hear all these names being bandied about on here and often wonder what I am missing out on :D If it fits, looks reasonable and doesn't cost much I will wear it, if it doesn't then I won't.

What's this Per Una that keeps being talked about lately?

    Moggins,

I am so with you. I would not be able to tell if it was a real designer item let alone if it was a fake.

I have a feeling that Per Una is Marks and Sparks brand. But what do I know. M&S are bit posh for me :rotfl:

Thinking about this a bit more today, in fact it wasnt that long ago ( in my memory time- so within the last 20 years) where a plastic carrier bag was something that in supermarkets was ALWAYS PAID FOR. It wasnt the green amongst us who reused carriers at supermarkets, it was pretty much everyone aside from the profoundly lazy. I remember counting out coppers at nans for the bag money, if for whatever reason there were none left. I wonder how the situation is in Ireland after theyve got the carrier bag tax, i bet people there are reusing all the time. Anyone know? I saw some footage of dublin on tv a while ago & all the big chains ( river islands/ allsports etc) had printed paper bags, but paper bags arnt that good for lugging a weeks shopping for 2 on the bus? anyone know?
Personally, Im well up for the carrier bag tax, plastic bags are a scourge on our enviroment, and being made from oil... well its obvious. Round here you can barely buy a bag of crisps without some shopkeeper trying to give you a bag for them  I wont stand for it!!!
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

You'd know it if you saw the real thing, but none of us could afford the real thing! Most of the designer labels that are out there are mundane quality products that a designer has just stuck his/her name on to make money. The real stuff is stunning though. My friend and I are both keen on sewing and we were in London recently so we thought we'd look around Harrods and pretend we were posh! I have to say the quality of the real designer clothes left us speechless. The quality of the materials and the craftmanship was just gorgeous. My friend is a very talented dressmaker, but she spent 10 minutes examining this stunning jacket because she just couldn't work out how it had been put together. It was £2000, but if I was wealthy I would have happily bought out as it was a timeless piece.

Most of the designer stuff on the high street is rubbish though. I saw some CK undies in a shop once and they were all £30-40 and yet the material was vile and some of the stitching was uneven!

I asked an Irish friend about this and she said everyone had just accepted the new tax and everyone just took bags with them to the supermarket. I really don't understand why the government doesn't change things here.

One thing I have noticed about people who dont have money problems is they dont spend more than they have to. If you were buying a car you would look for the best deal, people hunt for cheap holiday deals, you look for the best mortgage etc so why be worried that you have gone to poundstretcher or Lidl if that is where the bargains are?

You're right. I don't consider the stuff they sell at M&S and Zara as 'designer'. It all looks the same and fits the same. Ugh. I don't mind buying cheap basic tops and such, but when it comes to suits, the difference between cheap and expensive is huge.

I have a gorgeous suit that I bought in a second-hand designer store for £90. The tags were still on it, including the original price - £895! Believe me, anyone who's not blind can see the difference between this suit and the ones they sell on the high street. And £895 is nowhere near the price ceiling. I've yet to find a £2000 one in a second-hand shop, though.
