Bad attitude to os?

There are many ways to be rich and having money is one. I know this sounds horrible. But when I see people with fancy cars and fancy clothes and big houses. I always jump to the conclusion of how much they own the bank.
And to be blunt people with money and I am not talking the likes who win it. But the ones who inhert from a long family line or work building up a business etc. Don't tend to spend it like water.
To me being OS is to be life rich. And that is way more important than money to me. I like to potter around my garden tending my veg.
As I said I buy for value for money. I shop most of the supermarkets for the specials. And there are few items that I buy from Aldi as the quality is great and the price is
.
I always make sure that I am not making a special journey but will do other errands at the same time.
I find OS is not just about saving money. But about quality of life. It would take a lot of money and I do mean a lot of money to make me get up at 5am every morning to catch a train to London. And then not get back home again until 7/8pm.
Taking a lower paid job closer to home means an easier day for all. My husband at the moment works 5 min walk from home. So does not have to use the car. Can come home at lunch time so has a fresh meal everyday. So it means less wear and tear on the car as well as less fuel being used. So saving all around.
Just me need to get a job then we might be able to afford to buy some new carpets :rotfl:

EN-riching and empowering!!
Living with OS ways, means and values means that we are not de-skilling ourselves by relying on technology to provide!
Plus there are the associated environmental issues, the health issues, the financial issues, quality issues, self-esteem .... oh, just don't get me started!!!! :rotfl: :rotfl:

Rachie B,
In some ways it does get me down, but I close my door and I am 'home'. I have tried to move but I can't afford to. On the plus side trying to move made me realise what a wonderful house I have, even if it's not in a great area and the neighbours are well, make your own mind up.
BTW, I live in a council estate. There's nothing posh or clever about where I live, I just grew up here and stayed here.

This is truly making me feel like a member of a very exclusive club. We Old Stylers seem to be dotted all over the country. The OS ladder has led to good rewards. No debt. Holidays. Nice houses. OSers are true to themselves and confident enough to take this path through life.
And I hope our children are inheriting our common sense way of life.
I am SO proud of my kids, when they have a food party at school they say 'what can we make' rather than 'what shall we buy' Sadly nobody else seems to bring in /hm food, so we have a bit of a reputation for yummy stuff, an odd bun or two strays off to the staffroom...
Also they LOVE going to the charity shop, and are so pleased when its new clothes time and I have been to the charity shop, primark (sale rail;)) or got some catalogue bargains like i did for dd. Kitted her out in 2xtrousers, catsuit, 2x tops, enormous lined curtains and duvet covers all for £40

I have tried being OS for a while - I havnt got problem debts but I have got debts and I didnt want to continue living my life that way.
I have mainly been trying to get my food and takeaway spending down which has been succesful so far - the side effects are - weight loss, whole family are healthier, children are learning to cook and I am causing less harm to the enviroment. I am not ashamed about going to Lidl although I dont go very often as there isnt one near me. A lot of people I know with a lot of money have been doing os for some time, as previous posters have stated a lot of people with flash cars and houses are able to do so because of credit.0 -

And how many people think that popping a ready meal in to the microwave is cooking.
It proves that de-skilling is everywhere.
I mean when people say how much they spend on shopping they always say I spent £15-£20 on cleaning products
I mean I still have a quarter of a bottle of flash orange de-greaser cleaner. That I got on try me free. And that has to be nearly 2 years ago. And no I am not a dirty tart :rotfl: Just a little bit of cleaner and a lot of elbow grease.
Granted some times being OS takes longer. But I prefer to do for the pride of it.
Long live OS.

This site and the Old Style forum has helped me alot too, just wish I had it many years ago when I was working and not worrying about money I'd be much better off now.
I can't actually 'save' money but what I do now is stay away from the shops till I 'have' to go and Queenie sent me a lovely pm about I can't remember the word but it was something like pretend savings ( sorry queenie) which made a lot of sense and I was grateful for.
I also say do I really like it or do i really need it. I still have lots of cleaning stuff to use then I'll explore the vinegar thread.
I don't care what carrier bags I use and I shop at aldi and Lidl.
I also think twice about using the car these days too.Women and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should get used to it.;)

sounds a bit like my hometown
not to be stereotyping too much here
but surely you arent the only household in your council estate to not be able to afford to shop @ waitrose ???
if it were some big "posh" neighbourhood maybe i could understand their snobbish attitudes !
calley to be able to afford " a big " ie expensive ?
house you have to at least be able to afford the monthly mortgage repayments so its what? 3 or it is 4 x annual wages
but as to the other stuff yeah, its quite easy to buy (and get into debt for !) cars ,household things etc on credit ,designer clothes from catalogues etc etc0 -
Rachie B,
I could not put it better myself.
Live according to your means (and be happy)!
And as for embaressment
... it is all in our heads!

My os is to get the best quality for the best price. Hubby is off work still, so in total will be off 12 weeks. I manage the money by getting the best value I can so the quality does not suffer. The best bargains are priceless!!!!!!!!!! :T :T :T0
