Bad attitude to os?

I went to Poundland yesterday and got the following

10 pk twix
tetley tea bags
Cadbury drinking chocolate x 2
multi pack McCoys
pk palmolive soap
colgate toothpaste
multi pack mcvities biscuits

I was telling someone I knew that I had got all this for £7. I was really pleased and said perhaps he should give them a try. The reply I got was that if he did go he would have to put them into a 'Sainsburys' bag in the car park before he got home, incase anyone in his road saw him with a 'Poundland' bag!!

I couldn't get over his attitude, I found it quite insulting actually, perhaps he looks down on me for being 'cheap'. Have any of you had a similar experience?
We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee.

Shopping in Poundland is not old style but it is moneysaving. Let him look down at you for being cheap and remember the old saying a fool and his money are easily parted.

I'm affraid I too am a 'snob' when it comes to stores. last time hubby was made redundant we had to ship at lidl, I was so ashamed, I could never use their bags. i am about to go down that road again, but I now have a nice strong Sainsburys bag, so I wont feel embarrassed.

Never fear, Greenwellies: the Lidl I go to is right in the heart of the most expensive real estate in the whole country (we're talking 5 million pound houses here...) and Lidl's car park is always choc-a-block with brand new or personalised plate Mercedes, Range Rovers etc (as well as my rather less new VW Polo!). There is a refreshing mix of salt-of-the-earth and cut glass accents to be heard as you go round. How do you think these people got to be so rich in the first place?!! Plenty of Lidl bags go into those Mercedes' boots, believe you me!

What other people think isn't that important really!! However I was just tearing myself away from the reduced shelf in Sainsbury's the other day when a v.high manager in my company went "Helloo SnowyOwl!!". Ugh I nearly died! She's not in the least bit snobby but I felt embarrassed all the same. Mind you, when I've been in Lidl I've spotted another manager from work - this one "married money" and is always head to toe in designer gear, wears things perhaps three times maximum, drives a top of the range BMW...yet there she was with the rest of us getting her Lidl bargains. There is someone in the locality with one of those sporty two seater Mercs - she's in there all the time, her car is practically a permanent fixture come 5.30pm!

    So what is snobby anyway?

Who has the right to look down on anyone???

Why should any of us feel inferior or embarrassed or intimidated by another person's attitude? None of us are doing anything wrong by being careful with our money.

This lot cost the OP £7
    10 pk twix
    tetley tea bags
    Cadbury drinking chocolate x 2
    multi pack McCoys
    pk palmolive soap
    colgate toothpaste
    multi pack mcvities biscuits

If the OP's friend had gone to a "posh" shop and paid £10 or £70 or £700 it would still be
    10 pk twix
    tetley tea bags
    Cadbury drinking chocolate x 2
    multi pack McCoys
    pk palmolive soap
    colgate toothpaste
    multi pack mcvities biscuits

So why pay more to get a plastic bag with Sainsbury's written on it?
  • Ah but I am a bit of a Hyacinth Bucket!!

I could never let the neighbours think that I was in such dire straits that I couldn't afford to get Ocado to deliver anymore. I live in a gossipy area, where everyone makes it their business to perceve what is going on in your life. Where possible I keep my self to my self, and I don't discuss ANYTHING with my children or hubby outside of my front door.

    paranoid - yea maybe!

    Darling, you should move.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

Just to be aware, Poundland is not always the best value for money, despite the 'everythings a pound'.

I get my toothpaste from Bodycare for 89p, which would, of course cost me £1 in Poundland.

Keep a wary eye on what you are actually buying....

I don't care who sees my bags but when my daughter says she has to take plastic bags up to school (at end of term to take home art work) I don't give her Lidl's bags. It doesn't bother me but children just need the slightest thing to pick on others and there are a lot of snobbish people there.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I shop at Lidl, Tesco, Morrisons, Poundstretchers etc. I don't care what people think. I too see Lidl's car park packed with Chelsea Tractors as they are so called. Particularly at Christmas and New Year time when everyone is in for their cheap booze etc. I've mentioned places to get bargains to people, friends etc and sometimes they are pleased with the info and others look at you in disgust. Some peoples' attitudes towards Lidl at times have totally astonished me. I've seen well to do people in Lidl and not so well to do. If some people are foolish enough to pass up a bargain then that's their loss. I certainly don't have money to burn.

Home Bargains is usually quite a bit cheaper than Poundland on goods like that.

As for any embarrassment, not a chance. I'd be more embarrassed to be wasteful by paying over the odds.

When I was younger I was the first of my social circle to go in charity shops. Talking like 15 years back when they were slightly more dodgy but I did have friends wait outside for me because they wouldn't go in. Now, they all go in them. Never resist doing something because of someone's opinion - you'll miss out and down the line find out that their opinions have changed and they're doing it now anyway.
