Aliasojo. I usually agree with you but in this case you have just branded all of us who wish to avoid being the subjet of gossip or rumours, as I would certainly have been in my office if I had appeard with Oxfam carrier bags, as shallow & trivial. Neighbours, colleagues and even friends can all revert to being gossips or worse still playground bullies under mob-mentality. I'm not saying it's right or fair, but it happens & we have to accept our friends faults as we have to accept our own. Sadly not everyone can assume a "live-and-let-live" attitude to their comtempories & peers. What is worng with trying to preserve our dignity & avoid such situations.Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

Ah i remember those Cheap shop carrier bag issues from back in the day when I was at school - the shame of taking your gym kit in a netto bag... i laugh about it now, was so silly! You could have the most expensive trainers in the world but god forbid you brought them in A netto bag lol
Im a carrier bag recycler too, always reuse bags from everywhere when we go to supermarket, just out of green-ness ( big ones from sports shops/ debenhams etc are great for the bread/cereal light stuff and they have less cutting handles) Or some jute bags Ive had from conferences Ive been to
Does always make me smile on the tube when you can see the city folk with thier "harrods" bag, with the print almost off though, using it to death. Mind you maybe they are all being green too...

I laughed when I read this thread, why worry about seeing people who "might" look down on you whilst shopping in a shop where you can get a bargain or two, if they are in there too why would they look down on you?
I don't care what people think about me, I used to waste loads of money on shopping mainly on food, but now I save a few pennies here and there and the money I save is used for things that I want to buy.0 -
I remember years ago, I worked in a jewellers shop, the manager was a complete snob. He would send me to Presto for a large tub of the basics (or whatever the range was called) margarine, and he would then wrap it in brown parcel paper to carry home, as he lived on a private estate. We all used to laugh about it, but it was quite sad really, what was wrong with a Presto carrier bag??

LOL now I KNOW I live on a different planet from the rest of the normal world!I had absolutely no idea that people would look at the carrier bags I carry! :rotfl:
I just grab the sturdiest model from my small collection when I go shopping, don't even bother to look at the logo. Although for my main shop I take my Lakeland shopping/car bags which are plain and hold heaps.
I think it's a bit of a sorry world if you can't bring home the bacon in whatever receptacle you like. And although I also used to work in a 'snobby' office, everyone there was quite happy to nip into Aldi's on a Friday to stock up with boxes of wine, I don't remember anyone being shocked by that (or refusing the wine LOL). Isnt Presto part of the old safeway? the only one ive ever seen was in Newcastle near the indoor market? I remember that being expensive ( esp for me as a student, I used to go to kwik save!) Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? What's in a name? If a rose were called by any other it would still smell as sweet! (Shakespear)
I can't believe that people are so concerned about paying more for something than they need to.
Eg toothpaste, if you buy from Sainsbury's you would pay more for it than if you bought it from Wilko's, purely for the image factor of the carrier bag, when carrying it to and from the car.
But do you keep it in the carrier bag once home? Every morning and night when you brush your teeth do you smile a little smile because you have better toothpaste from sainsbury's, even though it is the same brand? Are your teeth any better for spending more money than necessary on a tube of toothpaste? Why not buy the cheaper toothpaste and save the pennies to get yourself a super dooper toothbrush and if the neighbours are smirking at you because you are carrying a wilko bag, you will be able to beam a nice white big grin at them, as you think of how much more you are
getting for your money.
It reminds me of a friend who has a car on finance at a high interest rate. The car (an expensive brand and style, for the image sweetie) has now depreciated to less than what is outstanding on the loan and she is thinking of consolidating this and other loans onto the mortgage. i nearly had a heart attack and tried to explain to her the implications of this, and how she could easily get a 0% credit card. But she would not hear it at all, exclaiming that she wasn't ever ever going to have credit card debt!! So she is willing to pay even more for a car than it's worth or than is necessary! The sickener is she now dosent even like the car and points out all its faults but loves my 12 year old family car for comfort, ecomony reliability etc despite the fact that it is not a merc/BMW etc

Now thinking about this i am even more baffled.........
Do you mean to say that people actually sit at their windows looking out to see what carrier bags you are bringing into your house? Surely people have better things for doing (all that wasted potential MSE time, cringe;) )and there is a certain amount of paranoia going on here?

I seem to have one of those mary Poppins style bags that you can fit asbsolutly everything in, so if I'm just popping to shops, I dont bother with a carrier bag.
If I go to Aldi or Quick Save, I will purposley take a carrier with me as I tend to keep them to re use and don't see the point of buying another one for my collection. ( especially 9p!)
I too have seem many a person in the Aldi car park putting their shopping into watrose and selfridges bags!£2.00 Coin Savers Club - £72.00 :j :j
