Bad attitude to os?

This thread has been really interesting. Telling my oh about it last night and he remembered when my sil wouldn't go into Superdrug incase someone saw her - it had to be Boots!?
Now her circumstances have changed due to two children and a cut in hours and she HAS to be careful with her money. The thing is she is not enjoying it at all! which just goes to show that it's all a question of attitude. We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often cannot foresee.

Do you know, you just reminded me of some German friends of ours who are not wealthy, but comfortably off. They live in a very nice house in a neighbourhood of quite new, large houses. They drive a Skoda Octavia, and shop mostly at Lidl, and also Aldi. They also grow their own fruit & veg, & make lots of lovely jam! And they are some of the nicest people we have ever met.0 -
I'm a huge believer in trying to remember to take a reuseable canvas carrier bag with me everywhere, not only is it easier on the hands than the nasty supermarket bags, but you don't have to bin it, and its very helpful in shops that charge for carrier bags like lidls. The number of times I've been in a position to pick up a real bargain (like free windfall apples or some useful bits of wood) because I've had a bag in my bag

I couldnt care less what others think of me. I am happy. I am safe in the knowledge that I have paid off my mortgage on my detached house. My neighbour too shops in Lidl.I owe nothing on my Skoda (it is my fifth one by the way and runs much better than an Alpha Romeo I used to own.) We eat well from Lidl, Aldi and Netto and we are just about to go on our third hol abroad this year. It wont be our last. I love it when people are snobs about shopping, all the more bargains for the rest of us!!!Snootchie Bootchies!0

WOW
This is truly making me feel like a member of a very exclusive club. We Old Stylers seem to be dotted all over the country. The OS ladder has led to good rewards. No debt. Holidays. Nice houses. OSers are true to themselves and confident enough to take this path through life.0 -
This really is interesting. I had no idea people were still made to feel bad about where they shop. It's unfortunate that they're nasty enough that perfectly decent people feel they have to play the game in order not to become the objects of ridicule.
I'm incredibly lucky, I think, to have the confidence that I have to stand by every decision I make - including purchasing. But I'm probably guilty of snobbery too, from the other side. I really get a bad taste in my mouth from people who live for designer labels and are slaves to brands and who really believe they're better people because of the things they have written on their food and clothes. I can't help myself, I pity those people, and look down on them in the same way they might look down on me buying yellowed books in Oxfam. I feel superior to them, so I'm just as guilty of superiority I guess!
First off, though, I don't take anyone's carrier bags, because they're not paying me to advertise them, and there's really no reason on earth why I should take a carrier bag when I have plenty of re-usables. Then nobody knows (or cares?!) where I shop or what I've bought.
And those who insist you should be buying your food in Tesco, Asda or Sainsburys, well, we all know how morally reprehensible the big four supermarkets are. You're all within your rights to turn around and say "You still shop at TESCO? Oh, it's just that so many people I know are quite concerned about the ethics of the big supermarkets, and think a bit more about where they shop these days" - that ought to shut them up.
And I don't condemn those of you/us who DO shop at Tesco et al - I'm afraid I shop there a bit, too - but those of you shopping at Lidl (I don't have one near me), you can always take the moral highground a bit if you like! They're not as bad for farmers and producers as the big four, surely?
But yes, it really is a confidence thing. I couldn't care less if someone looked down their noses at me for such things. It makes me laugh and tells me all I need to know about them. I would only care if someone looked down on me because they thought I was lacking in ethics or integrity - that would make me stop and think. But if they perceived I was living frugally? Never - shame on them for not doing the same.
I think it's outrageous that some of you feel you have to hide where you've shopped, but I totally understand why you'd feel that way, given the pressure there clearly is. It doesn't make YOU shallow though.0 -

I love it!!
And after watching on the news the other day about Britain using 3 times it's share of the worlds resources I felt ashamed to be British and proud to be OS. I think it's shameful that this country is using so much and hate being tarred with the same brush as everyone else
