Apart from the baby talk I can get all that from a cat ;), although owning 2 orientals, they do make some baby like noises at times.

I still dont see what the good things are about having a child, the friends I know who do have kids, always seem to be having some stressy child related drama.
Bet your cats don't give you piece of Duplo fence and tell you it's a hairbrush. :p Seriously though, I know there are some similarities between pets and very young children but that doesn't mean they're the same and children grow up. Having said that, I'm not really trying to convince anyone anyway (it's your choice whether to have children and it's not my job to persuade you one way or the other) - I was just answering the question someone asked.
Any question, comment or opinion is not intended to be criticism of anyone else.

  • Anyway, the thread has turned into a deluge of people trying to convince the OP that they should have children. I don't think that was what the original intention was.

Actually, particularly earlier on in the thread, lots of people were saying the OP shouldn't have children (some of her attitudes and how she came across made quite a few suggest this I think).

What she didn't want was people (like me) telling her she was young and might change her mind about the whole thing.

You don't have to see any good things - some people don't - what do you think your parents would say if asked - do you reckon they could come up with anything!? :D

I am a little perturbed by men who take larger than average interest in pet cats I'm afraid due to personal experience - we won't go in to that here though!

Yep, agree. The same could be said for any close human relationship though; husband and wife, wife and husband, mother and daughter, son and father, siblings, employee and boss etc. That doesn't mean the relationships lack worth (aka good elements); far from it actually IMO.

Also, there really is no correlation between pets/animals and one's own children. I have a cat and two children. I would not die for my cat, yet wouldn't hesitate for a moment for either of my children.

I know of a fair few people that do regard their pets as though they are their children/babies so this suggests there may be a correlation for many (mainly those without children of their own but not exclusively)

:rotfl:It's not quite as bad as it sounds!

Don't want to go in to the more delicate details here but I once had a BF with a pet cat Randor who was the centre of his universe - he talked to him and about him most of the time.
If we came in and the cat was asleep on one of the sofa cushions he would carefully (without waking moggy) remove the cushion and put it on the floor so as not to wake (even if this meant that somebody else had to sit on bare sofa slats) and insisted that Randor slept in the bedroom with us at night.
Not only was this problematic for me as I am allergic to cats I found it shall we say rather off putting in certain situations as Randor was rather possessive and would often jump up on the bed and appear to be trying to join us - when I protested BF said I would just have to get used to him

I didn't ever get used to him - he would cook Randor's favourite Pilchard dish a couple of times a week and after a while I found that not only did his house smell of fish but the smell had a tendency to linger.

When we inevitably parted company I had a tearful call from him a couple of week's later to say that Randor had gone missing - we feared the worst but it turned out he had gone to live with a little old lady up the road (assumably she had been feeding him nicer fish) - he did call to say that Randor had come home and was pleased for a while but then he went on his travels again and decided to live with the old lady (Randor that is not BF) - seems the love he had for Randor wasn't entirely recipricated :(

Since then I have known a few other men (all batchelors) who are similar in traits to this BF so I personally give men of this particular feline loving variety a wide berth!

Apols all for taking the thread completely off topic! :o:rotfl:

That's much better and cleaner than I thought it was going to be!

    Sorry OP. :rotfl:

Which means you would agree that there is no correlation for the majority of people.:D I think a lot of people experience strong feelings for their pets until they then have children and realise that there is a huge difference. Again I should probably say for the majority of people, I just see no correlation whatsoever, personally speaking. Anyhow, in the big scheme of things who cares. :)

No chance when I have paid my tax and NI for years and will be able to get it on the NHS in a few years anyway!

Getting sterilised isn't top of my 'to do' list anytime soon as there are other contraception methods out there!

Yeah and I see in your eyes one is abortion!!
