Hiya my grandad used to grow all his own veg and potatoes etc years ago, I wanted to give it a go but I stay in a top floor flat, what I was wondering is it possible for me to grow things in the verandah? and what type of veg/potatoes etc (not plants) can I grow during the winter.

    Many thanks
  • Your a bit late now for planting, but u can sytart in jan with potatos etc
Although your short of space u could try growing pots in a growbag or tyres.
Google mighty minature fruit trees anbd look at those, they look fab

Of course you can but like tryingtobegreen said it is perhaps too late thios year.

Try looking out for a mini greenhouse they take up no room and can sit right up against a wall. At this time of year they are likely to be very cheap.

You could still grow winter lettuce in some pots but you need some wind protection
    Kind Regards

I grow stuff for my son because I feel sorry for him. He said he loves broad beans although I must admit the ones I have bought in the past have skins like leather. Anyway, I picked up a packet very cheaply in Wilkinsons at weekend and they can be sown now but they need some space apparently. I am going to have a go at growing them in a tub - the type you can get from supermarkets that had flowers in them. You could try this too; it would be a start. Later on you could do potatoes in a large bin or thick paper/plastic bag. I hear that people have lots of success with those - can't remember the proper time though. Once you get going I hope your balcony will be strong enough to hold all the containers.
  • Garlic can be planted now as they need the frost/cold. They can be potted too, but you will not get mutiples as there won't be that much spare space to grown but one a pot is still a result. I have been reading up on veggie growning and from what I understand you plant the clove now. pointy side facing up. whilst is cold the roots with grow and take place, they will then go to sleep (so don't fret if nothing is happening) then they start growing again in spring.
Hope this helps, you may want to research on google.
  • I would love to grow some veg in our garden this year starting asap. We would have to use containers, troughs etc as we don't have space for a veg patch. Am looking forward to having a good go at it with my little girl and so brought a few packets of seeds.Well my "looking forward to it" turned to "terrified of it" when i read the back of the packet! transplanting, germinating, greenhouses, repotting????as i said i am new to this but there must be an easier way!!!!am sure when i was small my nanna just threw in the seeds, watered them and chatted to them lots and horrah there were carrots!

Am feeling all deflated now somebody tell me there is an easier way!

Well you could just throw the seeds down, mother nature does it fine by doing it that way :D But if your wanting to start them early it helps to do it in a greenhouse to protect them from frost etc. I would just do carrots where you want them to grow, and just thin them out. Which means you pull some off them up and dump them to give the others room to grow. Pretty sure its wrong time off year for carrots through!

Sure other people will post more helpful stuff as i haven't grew veg in a few years lol
  • Hi
if ur doing carrots u may get carrot fly so u may need to plant marigolds at the side.
ive just got some tyres (3) and in feb im going to put potatoe seeds in, very very very easy. almost fool proof. if u dont want tyres (ur little girl could have fun jazzing them up with paint!) use grow bags, big tubs etc they all work on the same principle.

    Just go for it.

i am still amazed that all you do is stick a seed in a pot of soil, water give it a bit of sun and then out appear a shoot which when looked after turns into wonderful home grown food.

If you worry about always getting it right you'll never do it. we all get failures and that's how you learn

carrots are really easy as throwing the seeds in the soil and waiting.
Teansplanting is just when you sow the seed in cell trays/pot and when big enough you move them to the final planting place.
    Kind Regards
    Maz
