Have been reading this thread with great intrest (its taken me 5 days !) me and the kids are starting our own veg patches (small amounts of space in front and back) and have brought several packs of seeds from wilkinsons and am going to plant as much as poss straight outside as we don't have much space indoors am thinking that a thick garden bag with lots of drainage would work for growing potatoes is that right ?
Also wondering other then carrots what I could grow that would stay undeground as my house is on a fairly busy road and opposite a garage and dont fancy eating brake dust ect !!!
Thanks everyone am a compleate novice managed to grow spuds last year and didn't even do that right !

Over on the Freebie Board there's a thread for some free seeds -choice of flowers or vegetables - you have to take pot luck what you get but as they're free there's nothing to lose:j

unfortunatly no one in my house eats beetroot or parsnips.
Garlic is a good one we eat alot of that and I didn't realise radishes grow underground which is great cause we do eat them and I already have some seeds for them.
We go over to the freebie board as soon as I finished typing this
    Thanks everyone

Hi, we want to plant some potatoes (in the grow bag option),runner beans and carrots - never grown before so will be starting as a newbie experimenting. Can someone please advise when we should start looking to plant the potatoes (if we use shop ones), runner beans (start them off on trays of kitchen paper to sprout)and carrots?

Thanks in advance, any help or directions to websites wouldbe great.Am a bit confused after reading different websites.

    Cheers Lisa
  • Hello Everyone,

Ive read briefly through most of the posts..there is so much tho!

I have no ground to grow anything, but i take it from the posts above & beyond, carrots, parsnips can be grown in large pots/containers?

I know this is better for you but is this cheaper than buying from ahop? (once got pots, seeds, compost, fertilizer etc)

Sorry for a basic easy question!

Need some advice on what may be a leg-pull, people.

I put a request on my local freecycle today for a strawberry planter as I have some very hardy little strawb plants which I have decided need a second chance. One lady, whilst unable to offer a planter, did email me to suggest planting them in an old wheelbarrow and allowing them to spill over the sides. As I would not have space for this, she offered another suggestion of an old bra, lined with cut up disposable nappies for the water retaining gel, and then filled with soil.

Now,whilst I could offer sufficient cup size to provide a fairly decent crop, I am unsure if this would really work or if I am merely having the Michael taken. Can anyone advise? I am just about daft enough to try this one!

Think they might be likely to go paridae-up with that accommodation! More like taking the St Michael.....

You need a container where evaporation isn't such an issue, and something reasonably attractive....otherwise I'd suggest a pair of long johns with the legs sewn-up at the bottom, filled with compost & hung on a sunny wall, with holes cut as required!
