growing own veggies in bags and pots (Merged)

Easy really just put 1 clove in a pot about 6" across would be ample, plant so the tip is just showing. You need to plant them around about the mid to end Sept a bit later will be ok. leave them outside they are hardy and the cold spell will do them good. Make sure they don't dry out and feed them in the spring. When most of the leaves have started to die then it's harvest time. It takes about 6 months.
Don't buy cloves from the supermarket they tend to come from hot climates and don't do well here, try your local garden centre or if you have one near by try an allotment shop usually very cheap from these. I got 500g about 9 bulbs for £3.50 in ours, You'll pay that online for 3 bulbs + P&PYou can't have everything....where would you put it?0 -
I grew my own spuds in a large plastic bin, it was great because to dig them up you just up turn the bin. I did get a great crop. You do need to make sure you have holes in the bin so that the potatoe plants arent sitting in water tho'.0

Next year I'm hoping to start growing some veggies and I'm just wndering if the plastic "trugs" I've seen on ebay will be suitable.
They are the big, brightly coloured plastic tubs with handles and come in 30, 45 and 75litre sizes, will these be okay for some potatoes and some other veg?
I don't have a garden that's suitable really for a veg patch but I do have quite a sunny patio so if the trugs are suitable then it could be ideal!!
Thanks in advance

Hi Anna
No reason why you can't grow veg in them as long as you make holes for drainage and put broken bits of polystyrene or something in the bottom.0 -
They should be fine but I also agree re drainage needed,
I would grow spuds in a tough black bag/garden bag/old compost bag etc. you start with it rolled down and add earth and roll the bag up as the plants grow. I use old tyres adding a new layer each time so I can move them round the garden each year. Or an old dustbin http://www.gardenersworld.com/how-to/projects/potatoes-bin-grown/0 -
I grow all mine in pots, I mainly use the long troughs you can get - I assume they're the same kind of thing. ESK sell them very cheap as well if you have one near you. You should grow things that provide a lot of produce for the space. Cauliflowers, brocolli etc aren't really worth it. This year we grew -
Climbing french beans
Dwarf french beans
Strawberries
Swiss Chard
Rocket (planted in between the dwarf beans - also keeps the weeds down by covering the soil)
Carrots (globe variety to allow for the shallow container)
Potatoes (in patio planter bags but you can use a large bucket, dustbin etc)
Garlic
Courgettes (you only need one or two plants)
Various herbs, plus some indoors
I also have tea, lemon and chili plants doing well.0 -
We have free black plastic boxes to recycle glass in from the local authority.
I have been sent a new one.
L 22" X W17" X D 13"
I was wondering if I had holes drilled in the base could the old boxes be used for growing veg in like a raised bed. If ok then what kind of veg do you think would be ok in these.
many thanks
