I was in Morrisons - 3 days before Christmas in 2007 - before the "Look 25" rule came in and had a similar issue.

My self and my partner were out doing the big Christmas shop and were buying 3 bottles of alcohol - wine - along with a good £100 worth of food. She was asked for ID at the counter which she provided and then I was too - I was 21 at the time and had left my purse at home. I argued a bit saying that I wasn't buying it and then after they refused I promptly burst into tears as I had just queued for 45 minutes. They admitted I looked over 18 but still could not help.

In praise of the supervisor - she wispered to me to walk to the car park and let my girlfriend pay without me...

I can understand why they need to do this but disgression is something that is needed in these cases. Now if I know I've forgotten my ID I let the other half pay and leave the store before check out.

We thought it was really funny, DD was really annoyed at the time, I think we worked out to get a pub measure you would need about 75 bottles of the stuff.;)

i'm just waiting for the new managers at my former workplace to not realise i used to work there and pull the staff up for serving me
''why did you serve that guy?''
    ''he's 28''
    ''how do you know?''
''he worked as a supervisor here''

    pmsl

Clearly something is amiss....there's too many reports on this site of people being refused service while they have kids with them.

Not sure which part of the law the shops' lawyers are worried about, but it's happening far too many times in different parts of the country for it just to be the odd over-zealous manager's or supervisor's advice.

There was a story of a similar incident in one of the national papers today.
What's to stop you binning the shopping, telling the sister to sit in the car and then going through again?

I know it might sound as if the supermarkets are being crazy, but the bad press and the criminal proceedings that can happen, has to be taken seriously. In Scotland the licensing laws are changing on the 1st September, so alcohol sales will be regulated more seriously. Police will have the power to suspend stores licenses, and prosecutions will be more likely to go to court. Think about how many people will still shop in a supermarket that doesn't stock alcohol.
