It happened to me at Tesco, I was trying to buy some of the Tiny little bottles of wine, for the teachers at the Nursery who i've been helping out at for my PGCE, and they refused to sell them because I didn't look 25, I even showed them my ID (I'm 22) and they 'because I don't look and i'm not 25' they couldn't sell it to me...I could go to a pub and buy alcohol...how stupid is that!!

So has the law changed to say it's illegal to sell alcohol to under 25's, no it hasn't Tesco have a policy to ask anyone who looks under 25 for ID and at 22 with ID there is no reason why they can't sell you alcohol legally.

There is no law that says you can't sell alcohol to someone over 18 with ID if necessary if they are in the company of a minor. It's completely pointless asking 14 year olds for ID as they are not legally allowed to buy alcohol. Tesco need to sort out this fiasco because people will not put up with being humiliated by check out ops

They sound a bit thick. If you've proved your age with your ID that should be that. What they *should* be saying is if you look under 25 we'd like to check your ID - so please don't be offended..... which is good as they're not asking for ID purely based on if someone looks 18 or not.

As for the other things on this thread - equally potty.

What ID did you use? The only ID Tesco accept are photo driving licence, passport, national ID cards, or any ID card with a PASS hologram.

She didn't say they didn't accept her ID. She said they wouldn't sell to her because she's not 25.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: there seem to be at least 2 age proof schemes in shops these days: Challenge 21 (or Think 21 I think it's called in some places) and Task 25.

If I were prime minister, I'd have ordered the appropriate government departments and retailers to sit around a table with me and sort out which of these age control schemes to use across the entire industry, and if any company refused, they'd face very hefty financial penalties.

And in addition to those, the actual LAW, which says you cannot sell alcohol to someone under 18 (or, obviously to someone who you believe may be buying it for a minor, etc, etc). But the actual law is the bit that the supermarkets seem to be overlooking from the gist of this and other threads.

My Auntie just bought 2 bottles of wine and four cans in Tesco when she was with my little neice, and no ID was required nor did they snatch the wine back off her.

The age restriction laws apply to all shops, yet they have a choice of age & ID scheme that they can use - this is open to confusion, and smacks of too much government officials kissing the feet of the shop bosses. The age restriction legislation should also state which age & ID scheme they must use, and shops that do not comply are punished severly.

If you ever expect Britain to actually enforce its laws, don't have a Justice Minister who lets traitors off scot free.

This rule is crazy...still, even two months on from my incident in Tesco I still refuse to go back on principle. I started a thread about it too when it happened.

I'm 25, and I look about 21 (lucky me!). I can walk in a bar/pub and get served with shots of absinthe (not that I do drink it) no problem without ID, yet if I walk into Tesco I can't even get a bottle of wine for dinner without ID. If they are that hellbent on enforcing this, why not change the legal age of drinking to 25?!
What a person does when they leave that store with the alcohol bears no regard to the store or who is with the person. You can't hold everyone on suspicion of passing to a minor, and making them feel guilty for trying to purchase alcohol wether it be with a child or friend/partner with no ID is stupid.

I can understand if you look under 21 to be ID'd, it's a fine line between 18-21 but 25 is ridiculous. And I thought 21 is government guidelines anyway.
