Would it be worth your peace of mind just to hand him his money (with company of course in a neutral venue such as the police station) and take back your item?
Failing this, do log a complaint against him with the police. This is commoner than you think and the police are well used to dealing with such offences.

If he is in the locality get the cops to have a word.
they are far more likely to react if they are in the same area as the accused
