"In 1990 came the scare over vCJD from beef. We were warned that thousands of people might die. And tens of thousands of cows were destroyed to stop the spread of BSE--the bovine version of vCJD. The final death toll from vCJD stands at 164.
In 2002 we had a global panic about Sars--a disease described in parts of the media as probably worse than Aids. It caused 774 deaths worldwide.
In the flap over bird flu in 2006 we were told that one in four Britons might die. In fact the global death toll was 257."
altho we have been laughing at OP and her fear - i do hope these statistics do something to reassure her that her family is pretty safe.

To some people the risk is irrelevant. They are born worriers!0 -
Get a grip OP - People like you scare me more than Swine Flu.
My OH currently has it. No, he has not died. Not even close. A week off work and he'll be right as rain (he's had far worse man-flu), and despite sharing a bed I haven't caught it yet.0 -
Why do people worry so much.
youve got more of a chance dying from being struck by lightning.
did you worry last year when people were getting the flu? I thought not.
its all media hype0 -
Crumbs, now I'm worried
As someone who works in the rented housing market and does many home visits, it has just occured to me the severe risk I am at of catching swine flu from one of the many new people I am exposed to each day!
In future, whenever I issue a tenancy agreement, I shall hand out a face mark too.....0 -

Is that like a scarlet letter?:rotfl:or a tatoo of a pig?0 -
Amazed that anyone is taking this thread seriously.
Still , it's always useful to have another excuse for keeping LAs away..0 -
I think clutton summed it up perfectly, look at all the scares we've had during the last 10 years, and then look at the actual results. Quite.
If people took the threat/risk of being killed in a road accident even half as seriously as the hysterical part of the media imply this swine flu should be taken, we'd have some LOVELY quiet roads up and down the country!
Incidentally in the Netherlands they refer to it as 'Mexican Flu' which does tend to help reduce the panic by those who would associate this swine flu with the bird one and the cow brain one.0 -
I think what parents want to do is shove their kids in a room with other kids who have swine flu and get the whole thing over with before it mutates into something nastier.
I keep hoping I'm going to get it to get it out of the way, but nobody in Wales seem to catch the damn thing! Perhaps the virus can't live in torrential rain or something...hrm.“Don't do it! Stay away from your potential. You'll mess it up, it's potential, leave it. Anyway, it's like your bank balance - you always have a lot less than you think.”
