Swine Flu

I am concerned about my family with the government saying that 1 in 1000 will die from swine flu and 1 in 3 will catch it (h t t p://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8159488.stm). The agents of the house we rent insist on entering our home every 3 months. Such a person is very high risk to have swine flu due to their being in constant contact with a high number of different people day after day. Is there any way I can stop them entering my home and bringing the disease in? Have I really got no right to protect my family under these extraordinary conditions?
Do you read the Mail or Express by any chance???0 -
I think the OP will probably have got the message now
and may never log back on to read all the responses
Perhaps it's time to let this thread die0 -
This thread has really riled me!
What are you going to do? Keep your kids wrapped up in cotton wool for the rest of their lives so they don't get contaminated? Get a grip, it's flu.....thousands get it each year!My home is usually the House Buying, Renting and Selling Forum where I can be found trying to (sometimes unsucessfully) prove that not all Estate Agents are crooks. With 20 years experience of Sales/Lettings and having bought and sold many of my own properties I've usually got something to sayIgnore......check!0 -

I'm glad I've seen this thread as I was starting to believe I was in the minority with attitudes towards swine flu.
At least I'm re-assured that the majority of normal people aren't really worried about.
Saying that....i am feeling a bit peaky - where's that hotline number?0 -
Do you not suspect a wind up? no one could really write and believe an OP like that.0

Oh there are people around like that, one of our clients refused to have anyone visit her in case they give her that 'pig flu' cos it will make her die"0

The worst case scenario states 65,000 will die - but it may only be 3000.
You are at far greater risk from people you meet on a day-to-day basis, not someone who enters your house once every 3 months.
There are 70 million people in this country right now, and they predict 30% of the population will get it.
The death rate, if at 1/1000 or 0.1% (an estimate based on seasonal flu), means that only 21,000 will die.
Now if the virus kills 0.5% of carriers or 1/200 (like in the hong kong flu), then 105,000 people die.
Now this is the worst case scenario; if it the virus mutates, like the 1918 pandemic which had a death rate of around 15%, and assuming 30% of the population gets it, 3,150,000 will die. The spanish flu had an infection rate of 50%, so 30% infection rate is conservative!
Scary stuff if you want to think about it properly!
But all these estimations are pointless, because they don't actually know what the death rate is, and they don't know what the infection rate is. So don't worry too much about it yet!0 -
Oh Sally, oh Sally, oh Sally.
Now go and wrap the family in cotton wool, read as much of the Daily Mail as you dare and just think.... there's an asteroid out there somewhere with your name on it0 -

Now, dont downplay the risk, there is at least one asteriod with her name on it:D
Sorry, if somewhere out there is a really anxious mum fearing for the safety of her kids that was not kind of me, but somehow I cant get my head around anyone being so worried that they would post the OP.0
