Cheaper areas of Surrey

All CR and KT postcodes are Surrey addresses. End of.0

I am not sure how this is relevant to the original question, but Kingston, Surbiton, Sutton etc are part of Greater London, and have been since the 1960's. It is the same with the places like Beckenham and Bromley which are in London, but a lot of people consider to be Kent.
Surrey and Kent are still used in the addresses of these places, but this is purely a hangover from the time that they were in these counties before they formed part of greater London.
I think that the OP was really looking for places that are commutable to Surbiton, but cheaper. Naturally, a lot of these outer London places have been mentioned because they offer reasonably priced houses compared to some places further out. I should imagine that most people are more worried about the type of area that they live in rather than if it has a certain address or postcode attached.
I never thought I would say it, but I would still reiterate my recommendation of Woking. The town centre itself is pretty run down, but there are quite nice parts within 10 minutes walk of the station, and a house that costs £300k there would be a lot more in a good part of Surbiton.0 -
County Hall is in Kingston, which is a bit of a joke (& sore point) as it brings work for Surrey council OUTSIDE of Surrey & into London.
Whilst I agree that the administrative centre of a county should be within the borders of the county itself, I am not sure it makes that much of a difference for jobs.
County Hall is barely a mile from the London/Surrey border, so a lot of people living in North Surrey would probably find it easier to get to Kingston than they would somewhere at the other end of the county.
Similarly, there are plenty of people that live in London and make the short commute to Surrey to work. There is not a barrier between the two places!0 -

Surrey County Hall should be in Guildford (as the biggest town) or Woking.
I think you will find far more travel into London to work than travel out to Surrey.0 -

I agree that Woking is the best place for the OP to live, and it is not really run down at all, big shopping centre, cinema, pubs all close to the station and some nice parts near Woking football ground for example. otherwise, the OP could consider Brookwood or Ash Vale further down the line, both of which are quiet and would cost less than anywhere in Greater London for a comparable property.0 -

The address thing is a historical hang over, as is Surreys County hall being in London & Surreys cricket ground being in the Oval near Brixton.
No it isn't. The areas of Surrey, Kent, Essex and Hertfordshire which were handed over to the Greater London Authority in 1965 are still in the postal district of their former counties. As are many of the outer areas of the former county Middlesex. It's not a case of silly people who haven't moved with the times being inaccurate. It's a case of these areas still legally belonging to that postal district, even if they are in a different municipal area.
Municipally speaking these areas are London, though from a postal perspective they are still Surrey/Kent/etc. In terms of what they are from the perspective of the lifestyle they offer they are, in large, London commuter areas, as are huge swathes of (the rest of) Surrey/Kent/etc. In fact great parts of the Home Counties are London commuter belt.If I asked for nice areas of Kent, would I get a list of south east London???
Yes, I'm pretty sure you would. I've often heard of areas like Bromley, West Wickham and Chislehurst being referred to as Kent, even though the are part of the GLA. In addition Chingford is nearly always considered Essex despite being part of the GLA. And I've heard people refer to Barnet as part of Hertfordshire.0 -
