Me, drank since 17, always had a well paid job so could afford it.

Drank almost every night for 20+ years.

I suppose got stressed out by work. Had to compete(?) against family expectations.

Drank to make myself feel better. Got to the stage I was drinking upto a litre of Vodka a day, have a swig in the morning and at dinner.

Was getting more and more unhappy/suicidal.

Was sort of saved by this/previous thread.

    Started to see a counsellor.

Having got very, very drunk one weekend, wife and children away, emailed my family saying I'd had enough. Had people phoning within minutes, this was late at night.

Went to bed, woke up in the morning, sis and bil had driven up to be with me.

    Haven't drunk since.

Told Mrs Mac all about it. She sort of understands, doesn't understand my social phobias, but doesn't hold them against me. Much ;)
  • You have done so well Al. Its easy to say this happend then this, but the emotion and pain are not easy to talk about. I understand so much about the social phobia. I always thought i was just a drinker. For me they seem to go hand in hand. :( Everybody at work thinks i am a well adjusted confident woman, inside i dont feel like that.

I always think it is interesting that other peoples perceptions of you are COMPLETELY different to your own:rolleyes:

I am like post people...pretty low self esteem...feel like crap etc...yet speak to anyone who 'knows' me and they'll say 'but you are so full of life/confidence'

I just tell them I've got very used to the mask...it's like a second skin:o

I am glad you have found this site and help...I think if it's helped one person it's a godsend...and I know it's helped many more....

Do you know the funny thing...I looked at your post and thought...blimey ...20 years:eek: ....and then I thought...

hang on...you (me obviously:D ) have been drinking since your dad died...20 years ago...not every day admittedly...but sometimes everyday....sometimes binging.......sometimes going for weeks/months at a time without....but still drinking for 20 years...and I thought ...wow....not got very far have I!

I know I HAVE.....but to still be at THIS stage so far on:o

And more importantly...as I've been reading my post....I'm thinking I should give my bro (yeah..that one:rolleyes: ) another chance...he definately doesn't deserve one:rolleyes: ....nore has he asked...YET...give him a couple of days....(cynical I know:rolleyes: )...but he WILL be in touch when he does not get his brithday card/cheque of his mum in time:rolleyes: )....I refuse to do everything for the woman! surely she has to at least buy the cards and write them out first:rolleyes:

Bless you sweetie....not everyone is at that stage yet;) maybe some time eh!

Your threads have got me thinking though......(maybe it's too many nature programmes:D ) ....after all...we are human beings.....and by that definition...'social' beings.....so why do so many of us cut ourselves off when the going gets tough??? I count myself among those btw......I find it so much easier to shut myself off than deal with stuff....:o
