I don't think I'm ready to give it up, I still need it to cope with some bad things really. I suppose I should just give it up completely, but its a big step and I'm scared.

I know what you mean, I am scared too but I can't carry on getting into the state I get into, I kept waking up the next morning and there would be splashes of wine all over the place and I'd have to scrub carpets and walls and stuff. It isn't funny that I get so hammered like that, if I could just have 2 or 3 glasses then I'd be happy but I just can't, after 2 or 3 I'm too far gone to stop, it just isn't enough :o

Maybe it's best to take each day as it comes

I try my best, and usually I'm fine. I don't even drink that often. But as soon as my body decides it wants a drink, I can't seem to fight it. Still considering going to AA meetings, but can't really do that without OH finding out

I've never been. Keep meaning too, but current circumstances dictate that I can't.
My mum goes to 2 a week and runs a third - shes been going for something like 16 years or so.

I have been attending for 42 years. I have been sober that time. I can honestly say that I could not stay off drink for more that a couple of weeks before I found AA. If anyone stays off drink in any way whatsoever then I am pleased for them, but for me I believe that I would have been dead many years ago if it were not for AA. I am the type of person that when I do not drink I am left with a big hole inside of me that needs filling. The AA programme fills that hole. I have a life that I did not think possible for me. I have peace of mind, contentment, freedom from fear, dignity and a measure of serenity. I believe that most people enjoy these qualities as normal. I did not. I do now. As you can probably expect I cannot sing the praises of AA loud enough but, if it is not for you, I hope you find some other way of saving yourself from the misery that I lived with.

I have to agree with brodev.AA may not be for everyone, but give it a try before you dismiss it.I was forced to go as a condition of being in my rehab center or I would never have gone to AA.Now I go because it helps.
Well done on 42 years. I heard that when the first person to make 50 years was asked how you do it,he replied "you stay sober a day at a time. And you don`t die." So far so good.
