Being in the AA fellowship all that is asked is if you have a desire too stop drinking.

Unfortunately Chas, AA doesn't work for everyone. I'm a social phobic and going to an AA meeting (yup I've been) only made me want to drink so I could handle the next one. I wish it was that simple for me :(

Hi micheleen I can totally understand where your coming from as there are lots of folk like you that just dont go too AA because of fears of one kind or another. But there are online groups that offer help so try looking at some of them.I started one up myself 2 years ago and not all go too AA so give it a try at least and you may find what your looking for.Today I met one of the members who was in States and has now moved back here and that was nice seeing someone whom I,d been in contact for nearly 3 years online

What theme would that be Al. Would it be about what people are having for tea or what's on telly or how much booze is going to be consumed tonight.

I don't understand what you're all about Saint.. but I notice you have a very low post count and can only assume you are a troll and out to upset other members by your posts. I think you're really sad and are spoiling a thread that many people have enjoyed. Do you like to spoil other peoples enjoyment on a regular basis I wonder?

i must to an extent agree with the saint, there is nothing here to help me or my cicumstances in understanding alcoholism, there just appears to be jovial banter which puts a mockery to an illness which i'm trying to comprehend and get help with.

fsdss I hear where you are coming from so perhaps a title change is in order.

However, if anyone likes to go back and read the beginning of the first thread it has evolved from a simple idea of self help where people were able to post about their particular demons and to be honest the past days banter has been a vain attempt to get the thread back for the people that it was started for.

I can't possibly comprehend the problems myself but I can applaud the users who continue to help and get comfort from the postings.

Hi fsdss,

This acts as a two-part thread. People come here to socialise with others who either suffer the same problems or have partners or family members who suffer.
We're not serious all the time, but we're also not insensetive. If you or someone close to you has a problem then we'll try to help. The help's from our collective experiences so it's never going to be perfect and indeed it may not work at all unfortunately. Mockery of anyone who's looking for help is complete anathema and I can't see where you'd find it here

It's unfair to presume they are a troll simply through post count and the fact you disagree with their view, after all quite a few on here started with low counts as they are posting under alter-egos...............as is their right with something so personal issues such as this

I do think the saint has a valid point, this thread was a very good idea and worked well, but it did start to become chatty to the point of silliness,by all means be friendly and support each other but the silliness at some points was taking away from the validity of the thread IMO.........that's all

I totally understand and I appologise to the Saint if he's a genuine newbie. I however find it hard to understand what the problem is? OK so the thread is titled "Alcohol Self Help Thread 2" but can't people just chat about stuff? like how they feel? is the forum that strict that it won't allow for people to have the banter with each other? from what I've seen, these people need and care for each other and enjoy knowing what each person is up to, whether it be about being an alcoholic or not... surely that's OK?

this thread is for helping and supporting members of MSE who have alcohol problems, Martin and the team are happy for it to be on this site and therefore there should be no discussion, MSE is a private site owned and run by Martin, his rules and his rules only apply,
if chattiness and silly posts helps in some way the people who have joined this thread for support then great, why would anyone want to complain about that!!!

Re the Boots Thread - that thread was not stopped due to the chatty posts, it was stopped because of posts making abusive remarks against other MSE members and BG's, this generated a lot of complaints and the way forward seemed to be to ask for only Boots issues to be discussed on the thread,
via pm it was established that many of the participants in that thread had become freinds and wanted their own place to chat, the suggestion of an offsite chat group was made and taken up, the members are happy, the thread is not generating complaints so I and the team are happy too,
yet people not directly involved have chosen to pick up the baton and fight the cause for people who don't have a problem any more???

this thread has moved to the Health board with the blessing of the MSE team who approve of this support thread being on MSE, if anyone has a problem with the way the thread is going or even that it is on MSE please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com
please do not post your comments on the thread itself as they will be deleted and reported

regards

thankyou i have started another thread to give you a better understanding of what im on about about my SIL s alcoholism
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=182462
we feel trapped, hurt and dont know where to turn because of alcoholism, in some respects i wish her dead because then all this will go away and we can get on with our lives without the fear of abuse and damage this is causing to our close family.
what gets me is that how far does an alcoholic go to feed their addiction? and where and whats the best way to force (in want of a better word) them into getting help.
although it is her problem, it is ours aswell as all we talk about is what ******* did today. is an alcoholic so selfish that they dont realise how much hurt and distress that they cause their family? and to what extremes will one go to reach the low point of getting help? and oh why do they hide booze? we have seen SIL cutting the mattress to store her wine, found it buried in the garden etc.
