I might as well have my go.

IMO the OP wife is partly to blame, given the conditions, and the action taken. Not sure if that is the case inlaw though or what difference it could make to any insurance claim.

If you can safely secure a childseat, the child, and ensure the lap belt is through all the right clips, (then possibly put the child seat harness onto the child as well) from the other side of the car you're doing well. I like to check by being on the same side as the child, as it's the only place you can see from.
I would expect to see parents and children outside a school, and not expect to drive past parked cars so close and so fast that I actually hit them.
Drivers with no patience and who expect to use any part of the road regardless of other users, just because they have a parked car on their side are a pet hate of mine as well.

And you think it is perfectly acceptable and safe to do all that with the door stuck out in the road?

I have a child (only one though) and can honestly say I have never done it.

I have read this thread and cannot believe what is being said The OPs wife made a mistake we all do it so why are you all making her out to be a bad parent you cannot pass judgement without knowing the full facts and i personally doubt that there are many of us who can truly say that they havent made a mistake with or without their children . The OP has admitted that his wife made an error of judgment and was happy to deal with the repairs them self The other driver should not have been driving fast due to the conditions of the day and proximity of a school all in all it sounds like a 50/50 accident not a blame fest

No, I think it's dangerous. But with one child you've never had to, if you have two children, is it more or less dangerous not to check the kids are belted in properly. Or would you let your 3 year old do it himself?
His wife was in the door checking the kids. Any responsible parent should check the seat belt is on properly. I don't like sticking my backside out of a car door, but I wouldn't like my child unrestrained because I didn't want to check. I usually get in on the roadside to drive as well, and have to open the door to do this normally. I don't expect some clown to hit it though.

My girls are the same age of the op's and I let the kids climb into their own seats from the pavement and then I climb in the back and fasten and check the seatbelts without having to go on to the road and open the door to do so. I don't see why someone needs to use both doors to fasten each seatbelt

I don't see how you can safely check the seatbelt on the offside, without being able to see it clearly. Maybe you have a very narrow car, or enough room in the back to climb all the way across with the kids in?

I have a peugeot 206 and manage to climb in the back all the way across. I have the seats pulled forward as it is only a 3 door car. I can fasten and check that it is fastened clearly enough.

How do you know the OP has a 3 door car, that can have the seats all the way forward? I don't, and my 5 door certainly won't let me fold the seats down to get in the back. I assumed he did what he had to, not what he could do if he had a different car.
