Oh dear God! OK, you've made your point. We're the worst parents in the world. Thanks for your input, could you now stay away from this thread for fear of repeating yourself, again, again and again. Many thanks.0

The difference is that you can slide into the drivers seat very quickly during a break in the traffic. To strap a child in you need the door wide open, sticking your bum out while you fiddle around with the seatbelt and you can't look all around you while you're doing it.For her to get into the car herself, she would need to enter by the roadside, what's the differemce in putting a child in the back roadside? And btw we're talking a cul-de-sac here not the A1 motorway!!
It might only be a cul-de-sac but at school times there would still be a lot of traffic around.
Edit: It doesn't excuse someone driving into you, she should have been extra careful in these conditions too, looking out for children etc.0 -

Trying to be constructive, I would respectfully suggest that entering a car as an adult involves opening a door after having checked for traffic, getting in quickly and shutting the door. Whereas putting a child in involves opening the door for a period of time while being busy strapping child in and therefore not able to check for traffic.
Whatever, it's happened, glad there were no nasty injuries, and I would tend to agree with a previous post that you might be better off to just get the minor damage sorted yourself rather than risking the excess etc.
EDIT: LittleMissAspie beat me to it, lol0 -
I didn't start the claim, they did.
Who are "they"?
If you mean the third party, then all they will have done is informed their insurers of the incident. It is up to you to instigate a claim (which you can do either directly with the driver, or directly with their insurance company if you don't want to claim off your own insurance).
Third parties can't start a claim on your behalf. (Although some third party insurers on being informed by their insured of an incident which they consider to be their liability may shortcut the system and contact you directly to offer their services to resolve the matter. In view of their letter denying liability, it doesn't seem that is the case here)0 -

I've already agreed that we're terrible parents, i'm actually asking about insurance problems.0 -

"They" are the third party yes. And they have started the claim against us.0 -
Ahh. Somehow this wasn't clear at all from earlier posts.
Just pass any correspondence you get about it unanswered to your own insurers to sort out.
If you don't want to pursue a claim against the third party you can just repair your car yourself. In view of the claim now being made against you, it might be worthwhile asking your own insurer if they want to see the damage to your car before you repair it. (It may help them assess the third party claim, should the amount of damage done in the collision be disputed)0 -
