I would highly recommend the skin clear Boots own range in pruple packaging very cheap but has done wonders for my very oily skin the oilfree moisturiser is second to none and I've tried loads, if you have breakouts I can also recommend Freederm gel which is now my desert island product - hth:)

I use this, it's fab and cheap!

I have been using a soap from Lush, I can't remember the name of it off of the top of my head, but if I remember I'll let you know. It's Black and contains Liquorish and Charcoal. Sounds weird, but it does work in removing the oil on your skin without any harsh chemicals. The charcoal just soaks them up. My skin feels smooth and silky afterwards without it feeling dry, like it does with some soaps that you know has just stripped all of the natural moisture and oil out of it.
If you have a good oil free moisturiser to follow it then I see no real harm in using it twice a day.

I've not tried OCM, but a friend of mine has mentioned the benefits of Coconut oil on the skin so I might try it. He says it makes great tasting pancakes too!

Have been using the Pore-Fection range from Avon for probably nearly a week now and at first thought it was doing a good job, as it's the one for oily skin, to now find that my skin looks no better now that it did a week or so ago

If your skin is oily you perhaps don't need to mosturize at night, alternatively use one or two drops of a gentle oil like rosehip or olive oil.

    I'm another ocm advocate :)

It's not really a faff. I use it twice a week now, more initially.

Get in from work, wipe face with face wipes, apply oil, do some housework. 20 mins. Run bowl of very hot water, spend 3 mins using hot flannel, gently squeeze problem areas using tissue to cushion, rinse with cold water then moisturise. Done.

Has made such a difference to my oily skin. Not really a problem anymore :) Neither are blackheads or spots, enlarged pores have shrunk. Is what you are doing any more time saving than illustrated above?

If it was working you wouldn't be here :rotfl:

It's just a different routine, is all.

    And it's very cheap!

I too would say give the OCM a go.

    Its cheap

    Its not a "faffle"

    It works

    My routine?
Buy virgin castor oild from chemist (ask as its usually behind the counter)
Buy olive oil/sunflower oil mix from sainsburys (cooking oil section)
But two empty plastic bottles from superdrug/boots (they seem to come in twos)

Pour enough caster oil in a bottle to come a third of the way up
Top up with olive/sunflower oil mix and shake
Store the rest to be used another day - faffle all finished for at least 3 weeks:D

Now the good bit - using it

Put head band on to pull back hair (mines long gets in the way and would do no matter what way I cleaned my face)

Cup hand and pour in enough oil mix to sit comfortably in well without spilling
Rub two hands together to warm oil slightly and then use both hands to massage face and neck. Using more oil if needed work away quite firmly with finger tips in the problem areas (in my case nose and chin)

Take a couple of minutes doing this - its really relaxing and quite pleasant

Take face cloth ( I use a big muslin) and wash out in reasonably hot water (hand hot) wring out and place over face to "steam" until cloth has cooled, wipe face, rinse cloth in hot water, wring and repeat untill face cleared of oil (about twice usually)

Now do that three times a week to start. If you see dry patches, top up your oil mix with more olive/sunflower. If theres no improvement - add more caster oil. After two weeks you should see a huge improvement with your oil production decreasing.

This time last year I had terrible reactive, sensitive oily skin. Sine using the OCM I have "normal skin". My skin tone and texture has improved considerably and even my "huge" pores are no longer a problem and are in fact a thing of the past on my cheeks

I still have roseacea and of course I still get a bit of a shine happening after a shift in work BUT not within two minutes of applying make up as it once was. And I can wear very little make up now - most days of late Ive been wearing the avon perfecter ( I couldnt even wear avon before because of sensitivity issues) and a bit of tan mineral and its enough

I was using their Foam Cleanser, Toner and lotion, but didn't find that they worked very well.
The cleanser was just foam, I felt no really effect from it.
The lotion was pretty horrible, it didn't seem to soak into my skin, it just kind of dried on the surface, and then when I came to put make-up over the top it just flaked off.... not nice.

The Toner isn't bad for just removing oil and dirt, but can't say the regime as a whole had any real effect.

I used to use Proactiv from America... quite expensive but my god did it work!! Cleared up any spots I had and then kept them away. The lotion was brilliant, soaked in and made a great 'canvas' on the skin for make-up. And the cleanser was nicely exfoliating and contains Benzoyl Peroxide but wasn't harsh and didn't strip the skin. The toner soothed the skin and kept my skin oil-free for much of the day.

Not overly the best of MSE tips as it is quite expensive, especially if you buy it off of Ebay or somewhere and have it shipped over... but if you know someone going to America sometime soon maybe they could see how much it is and bring some back for you? (...and for me too? Lol)

As a fellow oily-skinned individual, here are my tips:

Use an oil-free moisturiser during the day and nothing at night unless your skin feels tight from cleansing (but it shouldn't, and if it does you're using a cleanser that's too harsh for your skin). I find the Biore range good, but Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream is best for me.

Use a foaming/gel cleanser, not a cream. Creams are designed to moisturise dry skin and if you have no dry skin, it will sit on the surface and clog your pores.

Use a gentle toner. I've made the mistake of buying the harshest, most astringent toner I could find to blitz my spots and dry my skin, but stripping away the natural oils is bad and makes it worse as the skin tries to compensate.

Switch your brands often - oily skin is prone to adaptation - after a few months using the same products/brands, your skin might adapt to it and it will lose it's effectiveness. I say might because it doesn't always happen with every skin, but for me I use something until it's done then move on to the next. Moisturiser seems to be different, but I definitely find this with cleansers and toners.

Hope that helps! And don't despair - oily skin doesn't wrinkle as easily as dry skin! :)

I would just like to thank everyone for their opinions especially Suki's full response on just how easy the OCM really is. I think I will definitely give this a go.

Also after reading what Sara has said I might stop moisturing at night as this possibly could be another reason. What should I do with the night cream I have left as it wouldn't be very mse to waste it

  • I would say only change one thing at a time otherwise you can't be sure what is working and what isn't. Also give it a month before you decide as skin can take a while to settle down.

Try Fresh Farmacy from Lush, did wonders for me. I stopped using it in favour of just wiping my face with flower water in the morning. I'd like to use it at night but it's not scrubby and I need to scrub very often. I was thinking of buying some more and using it with a flannel for scrubbing but I'm not quite sure how to use a flannel properly.
