Thats a big word. Do you happen to know which contraceptions are abortifacient? Is the Depo/Implant? The coil?
Any contraception which can stop a pregnancy after conception is abortifacient.

The mini pill and morning after pill work exclusively by preventing implantation rather than by preventing conception.

Other hormonal methods usually work by preventing ovulation and implantation. However since they are not always effective (I'm sure everyone knows someone who has got pregnant on the pill) it is possible for it to not stop ovulation but to stop implantation (if you get pregannt it means both ovulation and implantation prevention failed). I believe there are ways around this (for example by taking the pill without the break for a bleed or by having the next injections/implant sooner than is standard) but they are not generally considered a good idea from the point of view of the woman's health long term.

The coil without any hormonal bits in works exlusively by preventing implantation whereas the ones with hormones I believe are supposed to stop ovulation (but not 100% sure - I haven't read much about them) so again if that bit fails then it works by preventing implantation after conception.

I think pretty much barrier methods and natural family planning are the only methods where you can be sure that if a child is conceived they won't then be destroyed by the method of contraception.

(If you're interested in more information, let me know and I'll find some links.)
(Can I be nosey and ask why you are against them?)
I believe in the sanctity of life and that life begins at conception. (I usually restrain myself from commenting on contraception as I don't want to seem like I am passing judgement and telling people what they should do but since opinions were invited on this occasion I thought it was okay.)

Had a problem in the night and had to speak to a doc at 1am, all ok but I was in pain so I was going to try a bit of a mix of feeding tonight. Stood in Morrisons today and had no idea about what to buy and also don't want to confuse Maddy with a bottle as I have no intention of stopping BF.
She feeds so often she makes me sore! :o
We gave Alice one bottle a day from day 10 and it never caused any confusion. We just used standard bottles because that's what fits on the breastpump. We did do a couple of bottles of formula on night three/four - OH went to Tesco and chose Cow and Gate because he recognised them as they'd sent us a free cow.

can I just ask... because I don't get this... if you have just gone through the pain of labour etc WHY do you guys risk getting pregnant again? (not to anyone in particular, but there have been loads it appears who have not taken precautions before pills kicking in etc) or at least so soon! 8+ weeks and hubby hasn't been near me yet lol - partially because I want to make sure everything is healed but also because I do not under any circumstance want to risk another baby so soon
I preferred labour to pregnancy - the day I gave birth I told OH that I'd rather give birth three times in a row than be pregnant again.

Also the adult males in this house still like the Beano. :rotfl:
I still used to read the Beano when I was home for the holidays as a student. (I also have a little stash of Beanos I'm saving in the hopes they'll be really valuable one day.)

Thanks Sue; I totally agree, she is (her mum actually died in her arms while she tried to save her 6 years ago, so it is naturally enough a very very sensitive topic with her anyway). I've pretty much said that to her, she's said she doesn't mean to be, and that's where we are!
Maybe your wife doesn't want your mum to know but I wonder if telling your mum about this might help as she would perhaps appreciate why she is likes this and be more understanding and willing to back off a bit?

yo I doubt it would be ok in high school, that would defiinitely be about a boy teritory :p

tara knows about ordering a girl, she managed it using a well known meathod which involving having sex before ovulation - there's more things to do but it's based on the fact that girl sperms swim slower and survive longer :)

thanks sami, and for all the opinions! that's great if we can get away with being thrifty til he's 4ish, that's my DFD! :)

HM clothes are more green though, so I wonder how I can get that in after he goes label mad?! :)

Hi everyone just got back from a week away and I'd forgotten how you can all chat!! I was still on part 3!

Elle: I took Reece to the Trawl pub (which has just been re-decorated!) a few weeks ago, breastfed him there and it was fine - no-one said anything. I take it Rhys is home now? I've been sorting out baby clothes for my cousin as his OH is pregnant but I have some early/tiny baby vests and couple of dungarees if they are any good to you for Rhys?

Been wondering where you were! :) Had a nice week away?

It was the Trawl we went to last night :D Yup, Rhys came home last Tuesday - feels like he's been here forever now :)

Thankyou for the offer but I have just been on a spree of eBay and have heaps of things now :o I've got to stop somewhere.. OH said so

Make friends with someone with an older label-mad child?

    Morning all..

We really should have gone out first thing - fed Rhys at eight and he's been zonked out since. Just waking now so I bet he'll be awake all morning and have a grouch about his car seat. He does look so cute right now tho! :o

Are there any rules on taking dinky babies into pub these days? The place I went to last night was a Hungry Horse pub with a conservatory well away from the loud bar. Just wondered if I could take Rhys there - with OH too obviously!

OH suggested we start going swimming and that my mum babysit Rhys whilst we do. Didn't think he'd be so up for leaving Rhys with someone else just yet, but I think he's spurred on by the jeans I bought him yesterday being a bit snug (but they are the size he wants to be) ;)

Hmm.. thought Rhys was waking up - just wriggled around a bit, let out a big trump and settled back to sleep again!
I'd take him to any pub you feel happy with, 'family friendly' one will be more accepting if he cries but I doubt anyone will mind as long as he's not disturbing them watching some sport :p

nah I noticed Liv has a scouse twang but you didn't. Do we all have Mum's like mine that are obsessed with correct pronunciation?
in case anyone is miffed at what a non-accent is it's what my proper wiganer friends call posh but not plummy - you'll never hear me say 'oh yarr' or 'jolly hockey sticks' ;) :rotfl:

Lovely thanks, were only in Yorkshire but felt like hundreds of miles away from everything at home.

So glad he's home with you, is your house nearly finished now?

No problem will pass them on somewhere else.

Was it you asking for a tomy baby carrier on freecycle? I've got one but its borrowed from a neighbour so I'll see if she'll lend it out if you want

yep! and I had a geordie accent at school and the queen's english at home. Scared my school friends when we got in the front door!:D

Mrs T, I'm another of the labour wasn't too bad brigade, and so for me it's more about balancing 2 kinds of risk: wait a while and then be older and risky, or do it really quickly and have a small gap and be risky....:)

Thanks loads for all the nice compliments everyone! DH still thinks we're slightly in 'about a boy' territory, but I think fergus will still be too little to be at all self conscious about clothes :)

becles, sami, redmel, 3, mfd all with parenting experience of older boys, at what age d'you think home-made clothes would be a problem? (obviously I'll ditch the baggy bums and elastic waists pretty soon!)

3 you sound happier again, well done :)

scruffy, hugs for you, thinking of your family...

well today I have my work cut out as I have fergie to look after and also 3 other children coming over  they aren't the most placid either, one has asd and learning difficulties. I like them a lot, and also wonder how well i will cope!

You really are wonder woman aren't you!!

The clothes stuff depends on lots of things - one being where you live. DSS lives in a small village and his school is tiny (there were 10 in his year) so I think that has slowed his fashion consciousness a little. He is 9 1/2 now and he is getting really fussy. But for other kids as Sami said it could be as early as starting school (although having said that - those kids usually belong to fashion consciuos parents - no offence intended ;)).
I also think it depends on how good your skills are - if you are making (for example) funky combats in trendy material then you may get away with it for longer.

Bruno - is there some middle ground where your mom visiting gives your wife some time to herself. So one saturday afternoon your mom visits with you and Elijah and wifey goes to have her hair done / for a coffee with friends / clothes shopping etc.
I don't mean this in a 'sneaking mom in whilst wifey is out' kinda way but as an up-front mom arrives, all have a coffee, wifey goes out and leaves you lot together type way.

I am not sure I am making any sense but if your wife accepts that your mom should have a relationship with Elijah there are ways of going about it which don't involve them sitting together all afternoon IYSWIM.

Would she let your mom sit whilst you went out for a meal or something?
