Husband never took the kids to a fishing lake yesterday as the wet weather put him off, instead mid aftenoon he took him to fish at a nearby canal and DS caught his first fish.

Today I have been to the best place so far this hols, somewhere I've always been half aware of but never visited. It's a pub that has quite a large outside playing area, several swings, slides, climbing frames to play on. The equipment is 'older' but not ancient and my 6yo loved it. My 9yo spent the time playing in the swimming pool they have. It's raised and 4ft deep, not sure how long or wide but big enough for an adult to do several strokes in it. Kids have to be supervised by an adult. There's loads of patio benches and tables on a large slabbed area, which meant I could sit near enough DS to keep an eye on him, whilst still being able to see DD. Food is served but only until 2pm then not until 5pm. We arrived between these times so no eating out bill to add on to the day.:D All it cost me was for a round of drinks (1 adult, 2 kids cokes) and a bag of crisps each.:T Didn't even have to pay to park.

It reminded me of being at a 'holiday site where the kids swim and play in the park. Probably due to the time we went, the place wasn't packed nor was it dead. DS found several similar age like minded boys to play in the pool and DD found twice as many littllier children to play on the equipment with. The one gripe which isn't the pubs fault was the amount of wasps there were, it's on the edge of countryside and I should imagine they were attracted to the smell of the drinks. Landlord said they'd ordered some repellants to hang from each parasol but they hadn't arrived yet, but were expected in next couple of days.

Wow this place sounds fantastic could you tell me where it is? many thanks...

No website but this is the address

Quite a distance from you, looking at your location, but worth a look if you are ever in the area. The village it's situated in is quite remote and has had its school close down some years ago, there's no shop (don't know if there once was) and a very limited bus service. I looked at the timetable at the bus stop and it mentioned 5 buses a day mon-sat but my neighbour thinks its been cut down since recently.

We went again yesterday at son's request and had our meal there. The meals were slightly more expensive than usual £3.50 for kids meals (pizza, sausage, chicken nuggets, with chips and beans) drink not included. Adults meals are jacket potatoes, omelettes or baguettes with chips and salad around £5-£6.50. Portions are large though. The meal was spoiled by the wasps still around, and I found the only way to not be bothered was to not have any drinks or food near you. It was quieter yesterday, though we were there longer and my son didn't have anyone to play in the pool with till a lot later on. I've told my friend about it, so hopefully we can go with her boys (if I can borrow hubby's 7 seater) and they can all play together.[/SIZE]

When I eventually:rolleyes: find work this is what I expect we will have to do as we have little family help and whilst there is childcare available it's expensive for 2 over several weeks. Could you tell me more about how you make it work -thanks.

We juggle our shifts between us, we have fantastic mates who have been wonderful to us, and if we are really stuck they go with my hubby to work (hes a community transport driver) there are some weeks we are literally pulling out our hair trying to manage!!!
This holidays I split my weeks holiday in half so worked 2 days one week and 2 the next and mates had the little one and son went on the bus not ideal but he didnt mind as he had his ds and books and the old ladies adore him so he gets spoilt.
then hubby took one week off and i took the next, and im having my niece for the my week off and they are having the 2 of ours for us, this is a very very new arrangement as we are really really stuck this year.
Im proud to say we have brought the children up, as there are no childminders in the area, and would be lost without my friends as have no supportive family, but its hard work some weeks!!!!!

    arrrrgh! wasps!

We went to Drayton Manor yesterday (thomas land) and the wasp problem was horrendous. Nobody got stung, but everyone kept saying how there weren't any wasp catchers hanging up.

We are having a pyjama day today :)

Will move all the boys toy boxes downstairs, do some painting, do some cooking, play in the garden, read library books and then go play tennis this p.m.

We started with a pyjama day today- a loooooonnnggg laaazzzzzyyyy day I thought-ha no chance!
DD read one of her comics and it suggested she dressed as one of her dolls, which she did, coming down with a near as she could outfit plus kids necklace, was funny first time she did it-by the time she was on her 3rd outfit change I was getting tired of this game! Then she wound her brother up, who was lounging about in just a pair of underpants, by bringing down a small doll that was naked apart from a pair of pants and suggesting that her brother was also playing the 'dress as a doll' game. :rotfl:

They then went out to check on their tomato plants, and next thing I hear is 'mmmuuuuummmmm' and ds has smashed a brand new jar of mint sauce over kitchen floor:rolleyes: He was in the fridge looking for a tomato to eat cos he was going to plant the seeds to replace the tomato plant which had toppled over.

Just as I'm thinking 3 weeks down, 4 left to go_pale_ some neighbours turned up asking kids to go play in park with them, which they did.:T This allowed me enough time to tidy the downstairs before they were back, having fallen out with one of the kids about the ownership of 1p they found on the floor! After lunch they played in the garden with another child.

Tomorrow they are going to a relatives as I have an appt. Then cos hubby has now gone back to work, they are in holidayschemes whilst I do my voluntary work. DS is on a 'watersports' camp this week, where they do things like kayaking as well as other dry land activities such as climbing and treasure hunts. DD is at a holiday club attached to a school.

I took the kids to a farm shop/greengrocers today - it was quite an event! The kids loved chosing the fruit and veg, weighing it out and finding unusual varieties that they haven't seen before. They were fascinated with some of the vegetables that still had muck on them! I thought it was going to be an expensive way of buying veggies but it was very comparible to the supermarket and the kids actually had fun. We then went home and made a fruit salad which my daughter thought was brilliant. Easily pleased :D.

We went to the library. My 4 year old was pleased to be given a wizard pic with his name on, to blu-tac onto the 'wall' of quest seekers. He also got a dragon bookmark and the 'mountain' set of stickers which I thought smelled of violets, unless the librarian had strong perfume?

He's excited about getting a dragon label for the wall next time. I think he gets a medal too, and some more stickers.

Tomorrow we're going to the seaside on the train, with a picnic. I'd never thought of going for a day trip before, the beach always seems so far away, but getting there by train is actually faster than going by train to any of the attractions that are less than an hour's car drive away.

It's been arranged for weeks, for my brother's birthday, but annoyingly the weather will be better at home tomorrow lol!

We went to Walsall's New Art Gallery today. It's free entry
My two boys 3 and 7 really enjoyed it.
They had a free activity which was to make a pattern on photo sensitive paper, expose it and then fix it with the chemicals - very interesting.
They also have a good family gallery and in most of the other galleries there were either puzzle to match painting collage making, still life drawing etc.. They came home with a few pages of art work they had done. Son No1 was fasinated by a piece of work called 'Dead Angels@ that was made up of paper sculptures and stencils. He wants to try and copy the technique at home but change the angels to dinosaurs! lol Melissa
