Nice to know people can vent on the Vent board and not be ripped to bits.
The OP asked if he was out of order, he got answers. What's wrong with that?

I have no objection at all to buying reduced goods and even waiting around for it to be reduced if it is obvious it is going to happen, but to follow the manager around with loads of food asking him to reduce it is, imho, an almighty cheek.

I don't agree he should have spoken to you as he did, but can understand why he may have done so.

I too regularly spot the prospective reductions before they are done, only twice have i very humbly/apologetically taken them to a member of staff who was happy to mark down ,but I would NEVER argue with them, I don't think it's my right.

I would take maybe 4 items, not a whole trolley load!!And I don't think I know better than them about when or how much they should reduce by,in fact if they seemed the slightest annoyed,I probably would never attempt this again, and continue to wait until the reductions are actually put on (which takes longer,as we know).I can't remember the last time I payed full price for a joint of meat!

AS for saying the manager was acusing you of doing something? You could hardly have swopped the date on the meat,so I can't see how you could have come to that conclusion. He just thinks you are pushy-and you spoil it for those of us who aren't.

Never known any meat be reduced to 20p-thats for the old fruit and veg/herbs!!

I have no problem at all about buying reduced goods or scrapping around at the sales looking for bargains, but I have a big problem about pre empting any move that the stores might make. If they have stuff that is due to go out of its sell by date , it isnt going to hurt to wait a little bit longer until staff do the reductions is it?

I remember picking up a same-day-dated Finest chicken pie in Tesco and taking it to an assistant who VERY begrudgingly went to find if there were any longer dated ones in the storeroom (or said she did anyway).

She came back and said there weren't any. Then she reduced it and put it on the shelf with the reduced goods.

When I picked it up she very loudly and cattily said to her colleague, meaning for me to hear it "Ooh she didn't want it when it was full price did she?"

What an appalling attitude! If you buy a same-day-dated meal you have to use it that day unless it is freezable and that might not fit in with your plans.I accepted the reduction as compensation for having to change my plans at the last minute.

If they don't want people to buy reduced goods then they shouldn't reduce them at all.

I have been disgusted by the reported behaviour of some of the managers on this thread. Plus it is interesting to read what most shop assistants (mainly supermarket bods) really think of their customers! Shabby considering that without us they'd be out of a job.

I think they are probably sick to death of you. They are trying to do a job, and you are giving them unnecessary grief.

I don't mean to be rude but you need to look at it from their point of view.

But stock rotation (or whatever it is called) IS their job! And in that store they are obviously failing to do it properly otherwise the OP wouldn't have been able to find so much short dated stuff!

Let's get it into perspective - it isn't like the OP interrupted a brain surgeon in mid op...or a fighter pilot just as he was about to take off... or a musician in mid gig!

Come on - we all know that the failing was a management one. If you don't check up on people they won't do a good job and will cut corners. This is obviously what is happening here. The shelf fillers are not being supervised properly and are not doing their jobs correctly. It is a fill in job for most people so the workforce probably has a high turnover.

To those who attacked the OP. Remember some of the people on this board are here because at this point in their lives they NEED to tighten their belts. Others like me find the info on scams etc and faulty goods very useful and find a lot of the posts entertaining (even if that wasn't the poster's original intention ;) )

I don't go to Asda - the only one near me is in the next county and in Chavtown so I only go there when I absolutely have to.

But if I went to the same one as the OP I'd be complaining about the number of short dated items but I would address it to Head Office I wouldn't bother talking to the rubbish manager.

I think the manager prefers to have the reduced items shared amongst his regular customers who DO spend money on full priced items, after all they contribute to the profitability of the store..

If they encouraged customers that only bought massively reduced items, they most definitely would be out of a job!
