I think 12 cans of that would finish me off mate

4 or 5 cans ordinary Stella does me in !

That is why from the 17th August no more beer in the house. Should save me some money as well ;)

I cannot drink the proper stella or stronger beer. Not that that is a bad thing

    Thanks all for the welcome

Thought I should say why I am joining - I do think we spend far too much on alcohol and as I am also trying to lose weight seems like a good plan!

I have got in the habit of having a nice glass of wine, which can easily turn into a bottle in the evening - and I figure when you go to the doctor and work out what the answer should be to the question "how much do you drink" - rather than answering honestly - the time has come to consider why?

I have gone for 20 AF days which is perfectly doable - I may even manage more

I would like to get it down to having maybe a couple of drinks - just once a week

If one cannot be honest with the doctor, it means they are probably drinking too much, and maybe in denial about the state of the problem.
Doctors on the whole will not judge and criticise, and they know the less that the patients drink, the less work they do, so they are all for people cutting down their alcohol intake.

Welcome to Geranium to the thread, what's the 72 part of your name, is it your birth year, the best year 1972 was  good luck with the August challenge :)

Welcome too to Caz, I think most of us can relate to being an all or nothing person. Good luck in your quest for cutting down, why not join the August challenge which Miss P starts scoring tomorrow :)

WB, good luck with the dentist later, you have my biggest sympathies, I'll never forget the pain of my mouth abcess (sp?) last month, I actually cried in public and I was all by myself  definately take the big brown tablets, they are great for keeping you AF, ignore the list of side affects that is as long as your arm in the box, take the tablets with some nurofen plus or cuprofen and that will take the pain away, plus the codine in the ibruprofen will help you sleep :) Don't forget to buy a parking ticket later though will you, same thing happened to me during the last holidays, I took the kids to the natural history museum to have a free MSE day out, even took lunch with us, then had to pay a £50 parking ticket  turns out you aren't allowed to park there between 2.00 and 2.30pm, and that it  just half hour a day!!! They obviously do it so that you don't park your car and leave it there all day as it's near a train station and they want you to pay on the meter

Hiya Stroppy, good to see you about  Fay also identified a couple of green things in my garden, I think she enjoys receiving dodgy parcels through the post, that and smuggling them in :D

It seems that bed wetting must be a man thing  it's never happened to me and in my knowledge, it's not happened to my OH (hope not anyway )

YM, I don't like that weaker stella, in fact I don't drink anything but stella. I've noticed my consumption creeping up, I now have a panic if I have less than 6 cans in the house. Good luck for next month, you can do it :)

I only had 5 cans of stella last night, I panicked from the moment I opened the first one as I knew it wouldn't be enough. I tried to pace it so that it would last till bed time but it didn't, started at about 6pm and finished the last one at 9pm'ish. I then decided to open a bottle of red wine, wine is not usually a problem for me as I'm not keen but this one was really nice, it's the first wine I've ever tasted that I actually enjoyed. Probably drunk half of that, not sure, not checked. I'm going to tip it after I've typed this message cos I know if it's still there after 3pm then I will drink it. I thought I'd hit rock bottom, but it turns out there was a trap door down there and beneath that is a downward spiral, I need to get off it. Need to get my bum in gear today, I've made 2 bottles of orange squash and shoved them in the freezer so they are cold for the danger zone time. Going to cook dinner early to avoid being in the kitchen during that time. Though dinner was cooked in the slow cooker yesterday and I didn't need to do anything to it but chuck it on a plate and I still managed to spend most of the evening in the kitchen with my secret stash of beer  If I was outside looking in, I'd feel very sorry for myself and wouldn't be able to understand why I just don't stop. It's like being inside a tornado, once it fires up you can't see or hear anything else outside. I'll be ringing the counsellors later to refer myself back.

Sorry for boring you senseless, I'm off to tip the wine down the sink :)

    Hi all,

I'm Caz, 36 years old. I live with my OH and our 2 cats. I really need to cut down my alcohol intake, not least because of the cost, but I am starting to worry about my health too, now I'm getting into my late 30's.

I've always loved a drink, but for the last 6 or so years, I would reckon I would be classed as a heavy drinker. I drink mostly at home, because a night out on the booze is REALLY expensive, as I can drink so much!

Unfortunately I am an "all or nothing" gal - I can go a few nights without having a drink, but when I do drink, I drink to get drunk. I've got to the stage of being able to polish off half a bottle of spirits in one sitting and even having 1 or 2 cans of beer afterwards too. I probably do that 3 times a week on average.

My OH doesn't like my drinking and hardly drinks at all - maybe 1 pint every couple of months max. I would like to do the same. I have a job I hate and drinking does brighten up my evenings and I look forward to a drink - so I know my triggers, I just can't seem to get out of that mindset.

So your support on here will be really appreciated and your tips to help me stop drinking will be invaluable. I will start going through the posts in more detail when I have a bit more time, but for the meantime, thanks for listening and I look forward to posting more!

    Caz
    xx

Sounds serious. I find that if people are worried about their health, then they really are drinking far too much. Normal drinkers do not worry about it. In the UK, 10% of drinkers drink 50% of alcohol.
Still, well done you for seeking help and admitting you have a unhealthy relationship with alcohol. That's the first big step.
Now you need to put in the action of cutting down (or quitting if you are a all or nothing person)
I know for me, when I had one drink, I couldn't say when I would stop. A lot of the time I would have many more (far more than planned).
Now I don't drink at all - it's the first drink that gets you drunk.
    Keep posting and good luck

Totally relate to what you are on about Jo.

I panic if I do not have at least 10 cans in the house. I work it out at one every half hour so will start at a time to finish at about 10pm. God how sad is that.:o Hirn.gif

    Talking of dinner I have so far this morning;

    Put out rubbish
    Been shopping
claened and bleached out bins after collection
cooked corned Beef hash for Lunch and the rest for work
    cleaned and wiped kitchen
    cleaned Garden of rubbish

    twister2.gif

Going to have a sit down before lunch and then get ready for work

By the way Jo you have done a great job as scorer :T

That bottom can be elusive - I know for me I thought I had hit it when kicked out of the house, but I plumbed new depths not long after. Luckily I didn't lose much, though many people lose friends, children, jobs, homes, etc
One of the worst things is losing hope.
People get off the descending elevator at different points, some don't get off at all and will die from drink.
You have to really want to get off and stay off. Needing sobriety is one thing, though you have to want it.

Just stopping drinking was not enough for me - I could stop, but not stay stopped. After a few days I would drink again.
Going through my life wanting a drink and not having one is a rubbish life, that's why I worked on myself to remove the DESIRE to drink. Thus no cravings.
That's what keeps me from not drinking.

PM me if you wish Jo
