10 for me now please Miss P :D

Although I am at work it struck me that not drinking has its advantages. Had to go out urgently tonight and was able to do so without thinking " Shoot, I cant because I have had a beer " Just got in my car and went :D

    Take care and sweet dreams

  • YM - yeah, it can be quite liberating like that :).

I was really worried about yesterday evening, as we went to a BBQ hosted by friends who seem to buy out Oddbins entire stock for their shindigs. Also, it's only round the corner so I didn't have the driving rationale to not drink. There were gallons of booze lying about, bottles and cans of everything, and well meaning hosts trying to ply you with the stuff as soon as you got through the front gate.

I explained to my host, who was already distinctly merry, that I was off the sauce. He looked baffled - fair enough, he's an old mate from rugby-playing days and we used to both really knock it back - but then simply said "Fair enough."

I drank ginger beer. Sooo tempted to surreptitiously add vodka to it (Mrs Malone was getting quite tiddly, though she has the self-control to just stop when she knows had enough), but somehow I resisted. It has to be one of the most difficult things I've ever done, but this morning I feel great, the sun's shining, and now I know I can get through a booze-laden social engagement without having to drink.

So yeah, last night was AF. Miss P, can you put me down for 9 days AF, to take me up to the end of the month? Come to that, can we count the 6 I've already done to make it 15 this month?

    Brilliant, well done Snowy!

Its funny how we tell our kids not to give in to peer pressure with smoking and drugs etc but we all struggle when its ourselves and alcohol.

I'm AF for over five weeks now and the challenges (socialising with friends) keep appearing but so far......so good.

Good on ya! When you beat the booze & do as you did it adds 'strength' to your weapon reserves........i.e if u have a wobbly moment in future you can draw on that experience!

Not AF again last night....really really will try tonight! As i said, once day 1 is done I'm usually fine! Got to drop car at garage 2morrow at 9-30 so that's an incentive!

F**K me I HATE garages & getting repairs! I have an old P plate peuoget diesal...1.5...SO economical & no major problems. Cam area sounded loud on advice of garage when alternator belt snapped...so got a new cam kit fitted December.

2 days ago I started getting 'whining' noises when I reved engine. Took back to Nationwide Autocentre who did cam kit (as guaranteed for 1 year) & left with them. They um'd & rr'd & said 'it's your alternator+ could be the tensioner & there's a noise from the crutch/gearbnox we think..' will be about £400-£450??! Took to TWO other garages for a 2nd opinion & they BOTH said 'it's your cam area...bearings are going, don't drive or drive very carefully as if it go's your engine is knackered' ....GREAT I thought! They both advised to take it back to original garage as they'd probably refittedd cam kit wrongly. Called Nationwide & told them I'd had TWO opinions it was the Cam & they must repair it as it's under guarantee. They were a bit snotty & said 'if we find something that's not been done by us we'll charge' & they would not tell me how much it was likely to be...FAB I thought I'm in their hands...GREAT. Just to make sure I called my breakdown people out...they took of cam cover & alternator/fan belt & straight away said 'it's 100% your alternator bearings, it'll last a little while but get it done soon' (he showed me the pulley that was noisy)...so now feel guilty about getting irate call to Nationwide!

To cut a long story short I phoned an autoelectrician who quoted £150 including fitting for a reconditioned alternator & then phoned another place (who had a breakers yard & garage) & they said '£75 + VAT fitted for a recon unit...!! RESULT! So THREE prices-varying from £400/£450 to £75+ vat!
  • Argh long post then lost it.

    Pah
Need to catch up with you all - weekends busy with kids, beaches, bikes etc - no more AFD's to report unfortunately but trying hard to finish the month AF everythings stressing me at the mo - I need to stop stressing.

Waves to all until catch up. bye!

DBM - argh to garages - completely sympathise - my campervan went in for a wee oil leak and they changed the gear box..........800 quid later I got my van back, gear box is now terrible - big fight with garage (they didnt ask me if I wanted my gear box changed) pah.

    Morning all

Sat here feeling quite sick. Managed to polish off most of two bottles of wine last night. Not been very good for a few days so was embarrassed to come on here and admit it.

So here I am on a Sunday morning with a stinking hangover. And I want to stop. I HATE feeling like this. So why can't I just DO it for gods sake!?

Well, I'll pick myself up and start again.

Seems others are struggling too. Hope everyone is ok.

    Miss P

well hubby & i did a bottle of wine each last night... finished it by around 10 & then drank water, knowing there was a 3rd bottle...

feel pretty zoned out this morning & wondering, what is the point of drinking? yes it tastes nice, but so does lemon & lime squash with fizzy water & ice? didn't particularly get much of a "hit" iykwim so why?

    hmm...

This is exactly how I feel. If Im trying not to drink I always try to remind myself of this and ask myself why do I want the drink and how much will I need to feel tipsy and is it worth it? The answer is usually, no its not.

Almost tempted to make up new user name for this thread, but surely no-one trawls individuals' posts to discover 'the dreadful truth' about their lives ....

So, we got back from holiday on Friday night. On holiday, we got through 2-3 bottles of night between the two of us for three weeks. That isn't unusual tbh. I bought plenty more when I did the shopping. There are currently 13 bottles of wine in the house plus assorted spirits. I need to lose weight. I am unhappy with my drinking habits. I don't sleep well. Our income has fallen recently, and I want to keep up savings/mortgage repayments anyway. Cutting back is the obvious way to kill several birds with one stone. This thread looks reassuring, in that there are plenty of people drinking similar amounts, so I'm not so ashamed and embarrassed (when someone on an American site I visit said they thought their fiancee was an alcoholic because he had - wait for it - one beer a day, and I doubted it, their response was hilarious).

My initial goal is that I won't have more than half a bottle of wine and one other drink on the 5 work nights this week. It's just a short challenge for now. What I'd really like to do is get the drinks in the house to last two weeks or more. But there's no point in being over-ambitious to start with, it'll make failing all the worse.
