A thought occurred to me earlier. For people who have given up drinking, do you do anything instead as a replacement? ie smoking? Or are most people on here AF free, smoke free, drug free etc?

Not me, but then I've never smoked OR taken drugs etc. Mind you...I'm getting a bit of an obsession with chocolate and sweet things generally. I do wonder if my body is missing the sugar it used to get from wine!!

  • I eat.

Not that I can be classed as someone who has given up drinking yet, but I am working on it!

In order to ensure I don't/can't have a drink (usually the evenings), I have to have dinner much much earlier than usual and I have to to fill up my tummy with lots of food so there's no room for the booze.

I'm not exactly a slim jim now, so I am going to get enormous if I continue to use that strategy every time I fancy a drink!!!

I'll get so big I'll have to start backing into the toilet........... :D:D:D:D

  • BB - Last time i stopped drinking for 4 months i replaced it with early morning jogs. I got an enormous feel good factor from running and knew if i was hungover then i wouldn't have the energy to run so found extra motivation to not drink.

Drink replacements for me: Wii Sports. Fizzy water with Bottle Green ginger and lemongrass cordial. I pour myself a glass of that every time I find myself thinking that a glass of wine would be good. My DVD collection has had a lot more use. I don't smoke now, stopped over 20 years ago.

Thanks, that sounds fantastic. I love all of those ingredients. Will add to next shopping list.
  • I have to say, when I have spoken at length to someone on an alcohol helpline counselling type thingie, I was told that I should not try to diet whilst I am trying to give up alcohol.

As alcoholics, our bodies are so used to the huge amounts of sugar and calories which are found in all types of alcoholic drinks (not just the sugary sweet ones) that to deprive ourselves of those calories AND to cut down what we are eating as well, is not a good thing.

I've been told to drink sugary drinks, such as full sugar sprite (not coke - caffeine overload!) while I am trying to stop drinking at first, as it will help my body with the transition to being without alcohol altogether.

So although I really do need to slim down, it isn't my priority just now.

(And I don't need telling twice to eat nice food and drink fizzy pop )
