GIGI, Jenny, my OH works rigid shifts as well 12hr 4 on 6 off and its a great thing for us as it means as i'll only be working 3 days a week he should be able to have the baby those 3 days. My work will be flexible to a degree on which days I will work and these will prob vary every week. On the odd occasion there is an overlap MIL is keen to step in.
I'm guessing that in most cases with 2 working parents most of the flexibility and compromise in working hrs would come from the workplace of the mother (rightly or wrongly) IYSWIM rather than expecting a service like the police to be flexible to every family.
We're working on the theory that the highest earner does the hrs required and the other fits in around. Pre ML that was me, when I go back part time that will be him.
Don't think this will be helpful to anyone, just in a sharing mood lol

Thanks GISI, SugarSpun and csh. I'm only going to work 4 days a week and I think work will be flexible if I wanted to take a different day each week however with the shifts OH does it still wont work out that we can only use nursery 3 days a week because of OH's shift paterns. It's also going to be really annoying when he has say Mon-Thu off but we have paid for nursery on those days. Personally I think the police force treat their officers crapply, my OH isn't even getting paternity leave because he is training and they told him if he takes time off he will have to redo the whole course (8 months). Will tell him to ask around though to see how others manage.

    Congrats to Catz!!!

    Welcome to the newbies!!

hopalong - horrible time to get that kind of news, but in a small way, possibly nice to know your DH will be able to have a few weeks to be with you and the baby before starting another job. DH was made redundant almost 4 yrs ago, we were so upset at the time, then I ended up in hospital with appendicitis and it was right the first 2 weeks after he finished work. It would have been much more difficult for me had he been still in work, so small blessings sometimes. I have to agree with SS, plumbers I would think are in demand, so hopefully he'll end up with an even better job! Good luck! How are you set up for the baby? Got everything you need already sorted? People on here are great for finding bargains!

    Hi Jenny,

I used to work for the police, and know several people who are married to cops. I don't think they would change their shifts for you unfortunately. As GISI said, they tend to prefer them to keep to the one shift as it's a team job and you need to rely on your partner, so swapping around wouldn't allow the same relationship and trust to build.
Most people I know have used family for help, or a flexible childminder, rather than a nursery. My brother works various shifts too, so my SIL is going to be in the same position.

    Congratulations catz and babies!

That's annoying Jenny, can you find a flexible nursery? If there are a few people in a similar position - and I assume there must be - there may be a flexible childminder available who takes kids as necessary. If there's not, it seems like it would be a really good niche market for someone - charge slightly higher rates but still less than the loss caused by missing days of nursery at a time.

I finally managed to get into Next, only two of my items were in stock and three of them were altogether vanished. Grr. On the plus side, my baby legwarmers came from ebay via China and they're adorable.

    morning ladies...

hope everything goes well for Tink... sending labour vibes!

    hugs to anyone who needs...

had my work leaving do last night and they threw a mini babyshower in the middle of the pub! Alfie was well and truely spoilt (has to be alfie rather than Alfina now due to so many blue clothes!) also got £55 in m&s vouchers which will pay for the bedding i think! and £10 boots voucher too so that will buy the bits for hospital bag / wash stuff for bubs...

feeling lazy today.. should shower and walk dogs... maybe in a bit! :-D
