They've probably sold out of their pre order allocation and are now taking normal pre orders as they would any other product..
I'm trying to figure out how you can sell out of a product that you dont even have yet??? As of today the RTM version is out and various manufacturers are tweaking to how they want it . But how can you run out of something that aint even been pressed yet? Yet another clever marketing coup by Microsoft.Lightbulb Moment  Sept 2006

As drivers need to be in 64bit, you can run into trouble if your hardware is old and the manufacturer has not written any 64bit drivers. Sometimes a 3rd party will write a 64bit driver which is what happened with my phone.I must, I must, get my post average up to 1 a day!!0 -

I can't also run Auction splash which I use to list stuff on eBay, so in effect the 64bit version for me is a waste of time. I have now gone back to the 32bit version of W7 and I can run the programmes, I would say unless your PC has 4GB of RAM or more stick with the 32bit version.;)
you mean you tried W7 RC x64? When you get RTM + GA you might want to try again as these issues may have been fixed by then.0 -

Yep its purely marketing. They can produce an unlimited number of copies at any price of their choosing if they so wish.0 -

Is it that hard to understand that the retailers have a quota of units to sell at the promotional price and once these have been purchased they revert to the standard pricing structure? Call it a clever marketing coup or whatever you want, but Microsoft sell software and that's exactly what they're doing, selling software..
I've made a pre order for something else that doesn't come out until November. The only difference between these two is that for the latter one I don't benefit from a substantial reduction in price.0 -
