You download a trial pre-release version that will start shutting down every two hours in April and stop working altogether in July.

And I have Windows 7 for 9 months at no cost.:j

From what I read on the Microsoft site, but I may be mistaken, the only difference between my download and a retail version is that in 9 months time I need to change the serial number.

From reading this thread on Wednesday to having a fully working Windows 7 today for free I am happy. So what if stops working in 9 months, I have until then to buy it.;)

Only problem is that there are no drivers for my HP 1005 printer and my Canon 3200 scanner so I will be keeping my Windows Vista anyway.

    Are you sure?
    I have a Canon i560 printer (probably 5 yo) working O.K with Win 7rc

    Yes, you are mistaken.

It will cost more then. You are trying to act smart but totally missing the point so it is backfiring quite spectacularly.

Won't they install using the Vista drivers?

You won't be able to do that because you're using one of the Release Candidate. Since that was made available there have been many more builds and the final version has only just been completed..

Save yourself some money and get a pre order in now before the upgrade editions are launched. You get a full retail edition for the usual price of an upgrade version, not to mention the prices are going to higher upon release ;)

Yes, it's free for now, but then you will need to do a clean install, having paid something like £80 - £100 for it instead of £50.

    From the MS Faqs:

Can I upgrade from the RC to the final version of Windows 7?

When you install the final version of Windows 7, you'll need to do a clean installation. So plan on backing up your data then reinstalling your applications and restoring your data.

In addition to what has already been said, it's quite likely that the RC has security flaws so you'd also be safer sticking with Vista.

Are you saying that running the .exe in 'compatibility mode' didn't work?
Because that's how I got my printer to work.

Maybe so but a Canon 3200f scanner is not a printer:D

  • But have you even tried running it in compatibility mode? If you don't know what we're talking about, you really shouldn't be using W7 RC.
