I found this thread two days ago and it reminded me that I wanted to try making kefir. Not wanting to hang around, I, um, now have my first batch sitting in the fridge
I bought grains from eBay and I received them the very next day. They have made a thick and creamy kefir, about the thickness of double cream, with a savoury, slightly yeasty flavour and a mild effervescence. I can see how it would be ideal for bread or scone making and I bet it would make wonderful soda bread, in place of expensive buttermilk. If anyone would like the name of the eBay seller, just PM me. (not sure if I'd be allowed to name them in the thread) :beer:0 -
So, tried some of my first lot of kefir last night. I know it's reommended not to drink the first couple or so of batches, but I had to taste the stuff. I can't give a very accurate desription of the taste, cos I'd had a sneezing fit earlier, which bunged my nose up and meant I couldn't smell or taste much, but it wasn't bad, actually, slightly sour and slightly yeasty. The effervescence was particularly noticeable - bit odd in a milky drink, I thought. The dog loved it, and I'm sure it will do her good, too. In neither of us did it provoke, er, exposive reactions, which is good
The second batch is kefiring as I type, though this one seems to be taking longer because I gave it a bit more milk than yesterday. Need to find the right balance of grains to milk.0 -
u dont need to put your kefir in the fridge it is fine out on the open top even if its hot
when i have a few days worth i strain it thru muslin for a day and its like a mozzarella type consistency, u can then add herbs etc to use as a spread or sweet to use as a pudding

I've had kafir in milk in my fridge for about a year, having read this thread, I have strained it, washed it and put into a little bit of milk. I hope it does work! I want especially to use it in homemade gluten free bread and gf fruit cakes. I always find that my homemade gf bread is very dry so hopefully this will help instead of the usual milk I use.
I will just have to be patient and see if my little kefir grains become active again!KEEP CALM AND keep taking the tablets :cool2:0 -

Hi guys. I'm the original poster (Leonie) but as some of you may know I had to change my name due to bereavement and it was unbearable to type the name. It is my daughters name and we lost her to cancer.
So i'm here asking does anyone have any kefir grains they could gift back to me please? I stopped taking it quite a while back but i'm fed up of feeling tired so I thought I would give it another go.
I shared my grains on here and it would be lovely to get some back here rather than buying from ebay as it would be a bit more spiritual as I could be getting my own kefirs descendants back if you see what I mean.
Of course I would pay for postage etc. Please let me know if you can help. Thanks guys.0
