Oh and what about the bread and pizza dough? I used to get the flour ready in the morning for the dough and add kefir but no yeast. then add the rest of the ingredients when it was time to actually prepare it. It gives it such a beautiful almost aged like sour dough taste. I know what i'm baking this weekend!!

Yes, bread and pizza too! I've just popped some oats and sultanas in a jar of kefir so I can have overnight oats for breakfast but I will have to sweeten it up in the morning as it was way too tart last time I had it and it made me pull a face! I'm desperately trying to eat more healthily at the moment and kefir seems to fill me up for longer.

I'm hoping the Royal Mail Xmas backlog doesn't slow your grains down too much. I'm wondering whether they're protected enough. I'd hate for them to arrive through your letterbox dripping milk!

I bet they will be here tomorrow. My fear is they spend the weekend in a sorting office, they won't smell so good then!

Do you use oat groats? I have a little wheel thing that smashes oat groats so you can eat the whole grain but apparently you can do the same thing with kefir by leaving it to soak overnight. This will make them nice and soft and of course oat bran is really good for you!

I will let you know as soon as they arrive.... my son made me buy some Nesquik today because he knows I'll be feeding him kefir in the very near future lol!

I hope so although I don't think we need to panic as it's cold enough to not cause them to go manky too quickly. If the worst happens, I'll send some more.

I bought oat groats to try and sprout them but the only ones I've been able to get were heat treated so no good. I should stick the remaining ones in the kefir since they're not going to sprout!

I used to get oat groats from the local farmers market but the stall stopped turning up and I ran out last year. I love them for breakfast in the winter and this has reminded me to get some. I could only get them in bags of about 5kg but they were still not too bad at about £6 and they lasted forever.

I've successfully sprouted wheat but not oats. I used to make granola as well. Squashed oat groats, chopped nuts and a few sultanas mixed with a bit of honey and lightly baked, oh that was heaven!

I've not done anything like this for a number of years as I haven't had the energy but I'm beginning to get excited again. Thanks to you for getting me back on the kefir trail :T

Guess who is a kefir mummy again!! :j

They arrived about thirty minutes ago and are now having a nice drink of organic whole milk.

When I opened the packet I thought they may be smelly due to travel but not at all, they were very yeasty but with a clean smell, I feel like they are really healthy and raring to go!

They are different than mine because they are smaller multiples whereas mine kept growing into big ones. The smaller ones are supposed to be better because of more surface area.

I'm thrilled and I want to drink it now!!

    Thank you so much :A
  • I've read this entire thread and have ordered some from ebay - it was ony 99p so I'm happy with that :D

Well I started drinking mine and walked around thinking I had a brick in my stomach all day. I remember this from last time. I think its while the little battle of good bacteria v bad bacteria rages. Hopefully within a week it should have settled down. Its quite common, just don't overdo it when you start!!

My little grains are very powerful as Superpup mentioned so I'm hoping to harvest a small batch for my freezer as backup and then I can pass some on.

    So glad they've arrived!

I think mine are smaller because I'm quite rough with them, which seems to be a good thing. When I drain them, I use a plastic spoon and a nylon sieve and 'smoosh' them (technical term you may wow your friends with!). Not especially roughly but I do squash them a bit against the sieve with the back of the spoon. This method tends to keep the grains small but I do think they actually grow faster this way.

Has anyone in the West Yorks - East Lancs area got any milk kefir grains spare please ?

My colony has caught a bug and gone nasty and like a fool I gave my frozen back up colony away to someone who killed it .
