I'd also love to get the grains to start it.
I contacted someone from the site referred to on a previous post on this thread but they never replied.

I think there's a few sites online that will sell you the grains, but I think it will be much cheaper to find someone who has it, and ask them to send you some.

I'd be quite happy to oblige, but I live in the Netherlands. By the time you've paid me the postage you're off worse than bying it from the online shop.

Just started using mine, I ordered it from Ebay.

Results were a slightly fizzy, fermented milk that loosened up my insides a bit, but not in an unnatural or urgent way.

I also got a slight 'buzz' from drinking it so I suspect it's mildly alcoholic.

Just wondering if there's any way of getting a more yoghurt like consistency? I keep the kefir grains in the milk for 24 hours.

Me neither, but that's no problem for me. I just take a few spoonfulls of the mixture and stick it in fresh milk to start again. Works fine.

    :)

Hmmm have you actually got kefir grains or just starter cultures? I'm just wondering with you saying take a few spoonfuls of the mix and stick it in fresh milk. Thats exactly what you do with the cultures, however thats not got any grains in and every time the mix is getting weaker and weaker as its only the by product of the actual grains.

To the person who asked about getting a thicker consistency. If you are using grains then over time they will settle down and the milk will thicken up better before separating, especially with the wamer weather coming. However if you only have the cultured milk the I'm afraid you are unlikely to get it as thick as a yoghurt.

I have had mine in organic semi skimmed milk (I only use organic milk) and they are wonderful now. They've been going for a few months and I can get a proper yoghurty consistency with them, really creamy. However I've had grains in the past that never went as creamy as this so I guess its down to each individual strain.

Can I just say that I'm a bit buried under requests for my kefir at the moment. Thanks everyone for the emails, pm's and requests on my blog but I have been keeping my stock very low as I only drink a cup of kefir a day so my dogs have been having all the excess. I should have more by next week so i'll post back then. I've got mine stood in water today as I like to starve them once every ten days or so. It seems to work as they are the best grains i've ever had!
  • And just think that my boyfriend claims only Poles are able to drink kefir :D
I must show him this thread, up till now he refused to come any near this delicious stuff (very popular here!) http://www.i-jedynka.pl/images/produkty/2008062314_kefir_zott.jpg

An update on my year old kept in the fridge kefir grains. They came to life nicely within a couple of days. I put them in some full fat UHT milk. Wow, the result, though not so good for the waistline is thick and creamy.

Anyone here willing to donate me some? I have a lot of stress related IBS since losing my job last year and probiotic drinks cost a small fortune. I had some kefir at the Real Food Event and it is not only yummy but very good for my gut. Thanks

Forgive me for talking about yucky stuff but this is too good to keep to myself!!

I've had a massive wart on the sole of my foot for many years and nothing killed it.

I read somewhere about putting a kefir grain inside the hole that the wart made and putting plasters on it to to keep the grain in place.

I did this and then repeated it when the plaster fell off and within one WEEK the wart is almost completely gone. :j:j:j

    I love this kefir stuff!!!

Nice to see this thread revived - thanks for sharing that. I heard it can help clear dandruff (the whey) - so I am trying to persuade my d-in-law to try it! I have made a face mask with oats and honey with the whey and it was lovely and soothing.

    Mostly I drink it though.
