There's some good news in there, Seaxwyn, I hope you can keep going - it would make a real difference to be minus one complete debt.

Interesting development at work..... my boss resigned yesterday. She has recommended that I be promoted to take her place and I think the Chief Exec agrees. It's a lot to think about. Her salary was £50k - 20 more than mine - and she told me to ask for £55k.
The idea seems unreal. I would have to take on a lot more responsibility, managing people, making big budgetary decisions, both things I have always avoided in my work life to date. But I can't really turn down a 20k pay rise. That's if they do offer it to me of course. There are other people there who are more senior and have been there longer, who might resent me being promoted over them.
Well I will turn the idea over in my mind and wait to see if I'm asked. It's something different to think about as I trudge round my paper round in the rain tomorrow!
Tomorrow is OH's interview at the college. I don't dare hold out much hope.Total debt: 1 January 2007 £[strike]49,387.79[/strike] 1 January 2012 £[STRIKE]19,312.85[/STRIKE] 1 August 2012 £11,517.620 -
That salary would make a huge difference to you - although remember it will take you into 40% tax, so the reality is that you will benefit by an extra £10k rather than an extra £20k by the time tax and NI is taken into account.
I say go for it if they approach you. It doesn't have to be forever - just until the debt is gone and you can relax again.
And if it doesn't happen, well you are no worse off, and it is nice that someone has suggested it to you as they obviously think you are worthy of it!

How lovely to be recommended by the current job holder.

And there was me about to point out that even with the extra money from the rebate, you still needed to find £400 a month just to balance the books. OH WOW MATE. Just imagine how much easier your financial life would be if you did get this promotion. You would really be able to pay down the debt, if you were disciplined. But I also hope that OH job interview goes well, just so he can get some work for his own self esteem....
If you are expected to do things you haven't done before, do some research beforehand. Ie ask your boss who has resigned if she would give you some pointers. It would be interesting to know her reasons for doing so if you can ask in a non nosey way lol. Or maybe you have other friends who manage people/budgets who can offer some insight. There is no point in taking the job if you feel it wouldn't suit you. It would make you miserable....
Still I hope they at least ask you.
chevI want a job that is less than an hour driving away from my house! Are you listening universe?

Thanks all. I hope they offer it. The outgoing boss has left for personal reasons - she wants to divide her time between UK and India, where her partner is, so is going for consultancy work. I don't think there are any hidden horrors to the job except for managing some slightly difficult people, and of course the challenges of managing a charity in an economic down-turn, our income has fallen quite a lot.
Whatever happens with this job, it has opened my mind to the possibility of earning more so I will look for opportunities. I have also been asked to join the Advisory Board of another charity, it is an unpaid position but will be good experience/cv material. I had never thought I was capable of doing a senior management job, but I suddenly realise I don't actually have a choice if I want to pay off my debt before I die.Total debt: 1 January 2007 £[strike]49,387.79[/strike] 1 January 2012 £[STRIKE]19,312.85[/STRIKE] 1 August 2012 £11,517.620 -
I agree about having good CV material......and the experience would stand you in good stead if you were to apply for other jobs too.
As for the additional stresses etc of a higher paid job - well, I find that the stress of my job is less than the stress of not being able to pay my debt/bills of years gone by. It is still v hard, mentally and physically, but I know which position I would prefer to find myself in, and am very glad that I made the decision when I did.Successful women can still have their feet on the ground.
