New year, let's hope it's a happy one.

    Of course it will be.

My debt today is £19,312.69. That's a reduction of £7,299.85 in 2011, or just over 600 a month. Not too bad.

    Pretty damn good.

More depressing is that £1,387.65 of the total is 'new' debt - not the long-term, low-interest debts I have been paying off all these years. And a comparison with my 1 Jan 2007 debt shows that the £30k drop is almost all loan payments. Putting loan payments aside, I have only reduced my debt by £580 in all those years.

"Well if you exclude £30,000 in repayments, the debt is hardly reducing..."

You *can't* exclude your loan repayments. It's like saying "If you exclude my wage, I haven't made all that much money this year." It's nonsensical, and it's just a sign of how you're feeling rather than something real.

You've paid off £30,000 and no amount of Enron-style accounting can take that achievement away from you. So there... :p

Meanwhile lots of horrible emotional stuff going on which I won't write about here, but I don't think I've ever felt so gloomy on January 1st before.

Aww, what a lovely bunch of people you are. And how extra specially nice to hear from Wordsmith - that's an auspicious start to 2012! Thanks Wordsmith for popping by and for those wise words which have made a lot of sense to me.

Thanks MiT and lionheartedgirl for recommending that book. I looked it up on Amazon and am already excited about reading that. I love the question one of the reviewers quotes, "If you didn't know any better, what would you do now?"

If you feel it is right for you, trust that it is right for your OH and it is right for your children. If you know it is not right, but stick with it anyway, then all the time it is not right for you, it is not right for them either. [It makes sense in my head; I'm not sure about written down!]
It makes perfect sense to me, and it was EXACTLY what I wanted to say.

Your children are getting older, some will be leaving home in the next couple of years, it will impact them less than you think. As for the other two, I bet they would love to have a happy unstressed mum for the rest of their teenage years?

Hi all. My debt total for 1st Feb was £19186.78. That's £125.91 less than on 1st Jan - and only £8 less than on 1st Dec.

I'm enjoying my freelance work and it's just been extended to the end of March. I've got my CV sorted ready to go out to other people, so feel moderately optimistic about work.

OH read my diaries on here so was confronted with a few home truths. He also read old emails I'd send to a friend over the past ten years or so detailing how I was unhappy with our relationship. So things are well and truly out in the open. He is doing 12 weeks counselling and also has got into meditation based therapy so hope those things will help him think about what he wants to do with the rest of his life. He is probably still reading so I will not write more on that subject.

Otherwise, life goes on... I feel pulled in lots of directions by work, kids, council work, parents, futile attempts to have any time to myself.... The house is FREEZING, most of the radiators don't work and there is no insulation. I am thinking I need to pay for some plumbing and other household improvements, perhaps when my loan ends in nine months' time.

Why don't the radiators work? Do they just need bleeding, or is there something else wrong with them?

Thanks ZTD. The radiator problem is bigger than just bleeding - we've done that. OH think there is sludge in the system. I've got the number of a central heating engineer so will part with some of my precious cash to get his view.
