I got caught on the A38 when they had roadworks.

Naughty people had moved the roadworks further down the road but left the 30mph signs up on the now empty dual carriageway. I slowed to 40, Then spotted the van..
I knew the ticket was coming but could not be bothered to waste my time trying to defend it. Why risk wasting a days pay when i could pay the ticket and be better off.
Did not stop me swearing at it though. And warn drivers of speed traps i had just passed.

The sad fact of the matter is that 30mph and NSL signs are placed in such a way as they expect that drivers won't start slowing down until after the 30mph sign and will start speeding up as soon as they see the NSL sign.

Still doesn't make it legal to do that, mind.

    - You should never have to pull over because someone behind is in a hurry,

Why not? If you are doing *less* than the posted speed limit, for whatever reason. And there is someone behind who wants to go faster, then you should pull over and let them go by.

Sadly there are so many people on the roads who don't do this and will cheerfully potter along at 35mph in a 60mph zone with a queue of traffic behind them.

Why? There's no moral or legal requirement to travel at the speed limit. The clue is in the word 'limit'. There are many sections of road where travelling at the speed limit is too fast and is unsafe.

If you absolutely have to drive as fast as possible at all times you either have issues with time management or with your personality.

Wish I had a picture to back this up, but the A34 southbound through Oxford is awesome at the mo...there are two average speed cameras, the second of which is hidden in a tree about 6 feet before the nice big national speed limit signs, deliberately trying to catch people accelerating back up to speed a couple of yards early. Nice.

You went over the speed limit. You admit you did 38 miles in a 30 zone, none the less you say you did this because the driver was behind you was getting annoyed, so that makes it okay in your mind.

    - To me that shows courtesy.

You should have pulled in and let him pass then, you could have also carried on and ignored him.

    - You should never have to pull over because someone behind is in a hurry, you should however judge an appropriate speed as the OP has, taking into account other traffic and road conditions. I would also note that speed traps are normally manually sited at a vehicle (even the ones in vans), it seems unusual that the car at the front was being targetted rather than the vehicle whose driver was getting aggitated.

You did the speed now you pay for the ticket and get the points, what if a child ran out in the road?!

    - The OP did get caught, and will probably have to pay the ticket and take the points, however he has come onto the board looking for advice. I don't see how a child running out into the road is relevant at all, as none did and the OP has obviously judged that this is unlikely to happen when choosing the speed.

If you saw a ball rolling into the road will you speed up to avoid it or slow down?

    - ???

Get to grips, pay your fine.

    - Get to grips with what exactly?

As for drivers course you wont get it, its upto 6 miles over, you have 8 miles over. 6 points for 3 years and a fine.

    - I have no idea about the course, but 8 miles over is unlikely to incur a 6 point penalty. Experience tells me 15mph over only incurs 3.

maybe it'll hep you be a better driver

    - Thats just unnecessary, you are not in any way qualified to judge the standard of someones driving.

Is this post meant to be an attack?!
I don't think really your whole post is very useful, infact it's all rubbish!
This guy did 38 miles in a 30 zone, what if he hit your child?!
Would you be coming on here giving it all to me or him?
Get down off your horse and face facts like the OP has too.
I tell you this, he will get 3 points and good job too as maybe he will be much for careful and a better driver!!!!!!!
As for my most un called for, he asked for advice, I gave it.
That stands, 38 miles in a 30 zone is 3 points and a fine, no merit otherwise; if he had done 5 miles extra he would have got the course.
He had many ways to deal with the matter at the time, to name afew:

    1) Pulling it to allow the other driver to pass

    2) Carrying on his normal speed within 30 miles per hour

    3) Turning a different way to allow the other car to go passed

He has done 8 miles faster than the law states he can on this road, if he had hit a child 8 miles faster he would have most likely KILLED THEM
So before you start attcking me, re-read what he did and then ask yourself, do you still think my post was uncalled for, maybe you've gfot caught speeding and thats why your so against it!!!

Face facts, 3 points and a fine.

So if your happy pottering along at 50, wheres the harm in allowing someone thats wanting to do 55 past?
And if your doing 50mph and you come up behind someone else doing 49, when you slow down to 49 too, why sit up their exhaust so the guy wanting to do 55 can get past you one at a time? Why do you sometimes drop back to leave a gap then speed up to close it when someone goes to overtake you? (round here they're normally 5 deep).

there were NO CHILDREN there, none, not a single one,no children were harmed,no children were killed no children were involved at all as far as i can see. maybe you read a different post?

what if the pope was there, what if the queen was there, what if michael jackson was there? they werent. the op was paying attention and took the fact that no children or infact any pedestrians were in imminent danger of his speed creeping up preparing for the national speed limit he was approaching.

learn next time SPEED DOES NOT KILL.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

inappropriate speed might kill, sudden stops can kill but going over a speed limit where in a few yards the limit now changes to much more than the current speed of the op isnt going to do much damage is it?
